I was wondering what the cut off was for top speed on the svt focus... it has prolly been posted or is somewhere but i didn't see it

thanks

thank you very much

Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords mag had theirs up to 137 on the test. Thats 2 mph less than a Mustang GT.

bump..

And I'd be interested to see if dropping the ride with coilovers like focussport has increases the top speed (less drag in theory)

The car is drag limited. There is no limiter on the engine. I've had it up to 137mph and it was still slooooooowly climbing. It was in 6th gear at the time at around 5700-6000 rpm. So the engine had a lil more in it.

Also at around 120-125 the aerodynamics of the car actually seem to lower the car an inch or so. If i have any headwind the front tires will start to actually rub against the fender with no major bumps in the road.

I had mine up to 115 yesterday. I was amaized at how smooth of a ride it still was, no major vibrations or anything. It felt like I was only doing about 75-80.

Humph-

Id be interested to see if anyone has noticed any difference with body modifications / kits, lowering etc. I'm not sure how scientific the procedure, but quantifing the acceleration and speed in that upper range might be useful. ( not as nice as a wind tunnel in you back yard! )

Thameth, How did the car handle at that speed? Were you going straight? You said you thought the car lowered an inch. Would you say downforce was excessive or necessary?

I don't get to race, but I think reduced drag and increased handling benifits everyone.

Had the car up to 125 tonight, and it WOULD NOT BUDGE! I don't know what was going on, it's kind of cool in NY, but the RPMS and the MPH were not increasing. It was almost as though there was a limiter

I only saw one comment that indicated gear used for top speed and that indicated 6th. In 6th redline is about 168-170mph. So I am quite sure that top speed is attained in 5th.

That was the case several years ago when running a GT Mustang where top speed was in 4th instead of 5th.

Top speed in the top gear can result in RPM being low enough that the power is far enough down on the curve that you hit the drag-power equilibrium at a lower speed.

The car handled amazingly! It was definitely planted to the road. Recently did some more 110-115mph runs and had to swerve for an animal and it felt like i was going 65. I really can't tell you if the downforce hindered or helped. I would lean more towards helping, any downforce you can gather at that speed can only be helpful, well other than the tire rubbing. When i did get to 137 the tires didn't rub though (not much headwind). This was mostly on a straight road but there was a long bend that i brought the car down to 110 for (just didn't want to risk it).

I'd second Thameth's opinion. On my trip to Nor Cal last week, I found a road where I drove between 100 and 110 for fifteen minutes straight. It really does feel like 65. I didn't notice any downforce stuff though. Of course, I already had two other guys and camping gear in the car. That may have biased the suspension already... I didn't go any faster than 110, but the car sure wanted to.

I'm just curious, Thameth. Did you do these runs through the Everglades? You'd have everything going for you, sea level, warm, dense air. The coating of insect gutz might cause some extra drag though. I don' have the courage for high speed runs, I'm always afraid a tire might let go or something.

Mine's new and have only had it to 90 but yes to be honest it handles and rides better at that speed than 50!

I think in that speed range and with some long curves you really see the best in the car. It ate up some nice sweepers in SE Kansas like it was on rails......sunroof open........

The runs were on private roads.. Don't ask me where and how you can get on them though

. Well the worst thing about down here is the Warm air. Thats your enemy, everything else is good though. I can't wait till we get some kind of cool night during Jan-Feb so i can see how much more power it gives.

I would never ask for such personel info, I just know there's some really straight, flat roads across south Fl that don't get a lot of traffic. Sorry about the warm air flub, the 'Stang guys wouldn't put iceboxes on their intakes if warm air was good.

I haven't pegged it yet but I was rollin' with a raced out supercharged Miata and a BMW Z3 coupe at 125 for about 5 -10 miles on the way home from a SCCA SOLO event at California Speedway. All three of us were old dudes ( hell, they were REALLY old dudes ) with s--- eating grins on our faces! By the way, that was my first week of ownership. So much for break in.
