On the subject of airbags breaking the windshield, my mom drives a 99 Escort and as hit by another driver. The passenger bag deployed (this was a bad accident, and the airbags did help), and broke the windshield with the little flap that covers the windshield. Then again, it is a Ford Escort, so the design for it and the focus aren't that different on the inside.

On the subject of the sensors for passenger seats, how much would it cost for the litte key hole that lets you turn of the airbags? I've seen those in cars, and all you do is put in your key and turn the airbag from on to off. However, I am not a sensor engineer guy, and don't know the logistics of the situation, that seems like it would be a cheap and simple solution. But I must re-iterate, my knowledge of car parts and pricing does not go beyond that of radios/speakers/amps/neons. I don't know how much it costs for those little key switches to deactivate the passenger airbag, but it seems to me like it would be a relatively inexpensive feature. It could cost $500, IDK, i'm jst suggesting it b/c it seems like a simple solution and requires 10 seconds to activate and de-activate. All of this, of course, is IMHO, seeing as I really have no idea what I'm talking about.

i got a ?...if they recall the cars...and we get our money back or whatever happens....what happens with all the money we spent on aftermarket parts. they should be put at fault on that.

Those switches are only available for cars that have no back seat (or really small back seat).

The government doesn't thing the average American is smart enough to turn them on and off at the appropriate times so they make it difficult to get for any other kind of car.

Recalls almost never (I don't know if it's EVER happened) end up with a Manufacturer buying back cars. Ford will just have to fix the problems.

Worst case (for Ford) in this scenario is that they have to re-design and replace the air bags, air bag sensors, rear wheel bearings and whatever is the cause of the potential fire near the battery (wiring?)

You can petition for a OEM aftermarket on/off switch on the driver side if you meet the requirements. However, best of luck getting a legit shop to do the install work thanks to the lawyers...

FYI

There are different types of pass. airbag disable switches :

1) Dumb switch that places a resistor in place of the squib (Initiator). Not too tough to make...
2) Smart switch that commands the restraints controller to turn off the bag

hey guys - This summer, right before the bearing recall, my left rear bearing went. It made a crazy loud rubbing sound. I took it to ford to have it fixed and untill I threw a fit, they were tellin me it was tire wear making the noise. Grr. O well, its all taken care of I suppose. If you got the recall, make sure you go do it - they will go bad eventually. Good luck everyone. I'm kinda bugged about these fires.

i was in the middle of a 5 car pile up at about 45mph and my airbags didn't go off.

the head light was cracked, the front crossmember moved in, hood folded, bumper fine and no air bag went off...then i got the car back and a day or two later i got rear ended and it didn't go off..

i'm glad that adds about 2-$3,000 to the repair bill dependign on how bad it destroys your interior.

mine will be gone soon anyway when i get my after market wheel and need a place for my ps2 on the passenger side.
