July 16, 2002

BLOOMBERG NEWS

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford Motor Co. plans to add a high-performance version of its five-door Focus car this year as the second-largest automaker tries to boost sales by expanding its lineup of small-volume vehicles.

Ford will begin selling the five-door SVT Focus in the U.S. this fall as a 2003 model, spokesman Mark Schirmer said. The company wants to keep the price under $20,000, he said, declining to disclose the price. Ford already sells a three-door SVT Focus and expects to produce a total of about 12,000 three- and five-door 2003-model SVT Focus cars, Schirmer said.

The SVT stand for Special Vehicle Team, which develops more powerful, high-performance versions of Ford's cars and light trucks. The group also is developing a new version of the GT40 sports car for sale next year. Ford executives have said the high-performance models boost the automaker's image, helping with sales of its entire lineup.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based company, which had a loss of $5.45 billion last year, is adding new models as part of a plan to return to profit. Ford said in February that it would build the GT40 after showing a prototype of the car at Detroit's North American International Auto Show the previous month.

kind of a shot to the heart if you asked me. pretty cool i guess, but aren't they changing the entire front end in 2004? so are they going to make a SVT mustang 4 door and a crewcab f150 4 door too? i have never seen a 4 door vr6 gti? is honda next with a 4 door SI? just how far does it go. i personally think they should have kept to the traditional 2 doors, but everyone seems to like this, soooooooo i guess ford did good, or did they just have a limited # of 2 doors this year, and these will fit in between the 2003 SVT 2 doors, and the current 2 doors? can you say marketing? scam? bs? sounds a little weird. oh well, hope everyone likes their cars. good luck!

Guess you never say a SVT Contour, or a SHO Tarus

reason i didn't say contour or taurus is because they are already 4 door cars, and last time i checked the SHO wasn't an SVT vehicle-maybe thats why it didn't have an SVT badge on the trunk lid!!

anyways, i'm not disliking the car, i just thought most specialty type cars stuck to their roots, not expanding into another market(i.e. 2 door coupe=single, young, etc. and 4 door=family, kids, baggage, etc) although i have seen many 4 door focus that look pretty good. having a 3 door, 5 door, sedan, and wagon in normal zetec engine form is awesome, but if they are going to make a zx5 in 'svt' trim, they need to do it in sedan and wagon as well. lets see if they come out with an 'svt' expedition or excursion, heck why not an 'svt' econoline van?

There was an SVT Expedition concept, called Thunder. It was never intended for production, however.

In my *personal* opinion both the three door and this five door are a joke for something with an SVT badge. The ZX3 SVT should have been MUCH more than it is.

If I were in control, the ZX3 version would have had a nice healthy factory done turbo install. Something around 225 hp at the wheels would have been nice.

It just doesn't seem right.

You do know the SVT F is most likely the most well rounded car SVT has EVER produced, right?

Autoweek which tests nearly every type of car ststed the SVT Focus was one of the best cars REGARDLESS OF PRICE!

I'll take their word and my own view on such a well rounded, COMPLETE yet AFFORDABLE automobile. Is there still room for improvement? As in anything the answer is yes. Stay tuned, but somehow I don't think you will ever be happy.
