Just sucks in air. A lot of times unless you're moving, it's sucking in WARM air...

Benefits: A Cool, Throaty intake sound that might be too loud for some people. My wife doesn't like the sound.

Drawbacks: A Cool, Throaty intake sound that might be too loud for some people.

And warm air being drawn into the engine. IT doesn't hurt anything but you might lose a little pull off the line if you've been running it hard.

If you are going to do this mod I highly suggest doing this as well. I have no scientific or dyno basis for my opinion, but after removing the intake and exaust resonators my car started running a little rough. I reset my ECU and now it runs better than ever. Is it as good as a "real" intake and exhaust? I doubt it but it is more air going in and less restriction going out. Only cost $45 parts/tax/labor so I'm happy.

What costs $45?? Removing the exhaust resonator or resetting the ECU??

i think he means adding a piece of dryer duct tube going from the hole where the resonator was to the front of the car as to suck in cooler air.

The $45 was roughly the cost of a piece of 2"x18" preheater hose and having a muffler shop remove the exhaust resonator as well. I didn't notice much difference when I took off the intake resonator, but when I also took off the exhaust resonator as well it feel better.

I have the Ice man add on duct and it works a little better than just removing the res but not worth $50 but I got a killer deal on it so I dont care. Removeing The rear res does help a little.

ltlrcrdriver,
It's not a dryer duct, it's a 2" x 18" pre-heater hose available at any NAPA autoparts store for $2-$4.

If you guys are taking the airbox resonator/silencer off and just leaving the hole open, trust me, your filter will get dirtier in that particular area, than the rest of the filter. There are several small areas in the wheel well, that allow all sorts of debris to come in around there. Add a tube, don't worry about the lack of "smoothness" of such a tube, it's a 2" hole, not like you're going to loose 10hp because this little tube has some is not completely smooth... not like you are going to gain any HP for that matter, but at least you'll keep your air filter a bit cleaner.

I removed the Resonator box on Saturday and noticed the sound difference, yeah it sounds kinda cool. But it really seems like the engine has a bogged down feeling now and slightly slower acceleration. This could just be in my head as I have no way to compare right now, but is this a possibility. It may just be that with the louder sound I feel like I am acceleration as hard as before, but I am really not giving it as much gas because I already feel like I am getting on the gas hard enough.

sorry dude...just the first words that came to my mind cause thats what i used to do it. i went to my local home-depot and bought a length of vaccuum hose. its 2" diameter and IMO its a little more durable than the dryer vent hose. also the plastic material of this hose might keep a little more heat out than the metal dryer duch hose...like i said its just my opinion, so dont get mad at me.

My simple solution . . . after watching how others had done this type of fresh air mod. Mine was . . . well . . . "free" as I had the hose in the basement . . .

I was on the list for the Iceman add on duct, and I got tired of waiting (only about 6 months!). I removed the resonator box, just to find out the the opening was only maybe 3/4" x 2" inches. So off to OSH, and there I found a downspout coupler, with a 2x3 inch rectangular opening on one side and a 3" round on the the other end. Needless to say, I cut a hole which is quite a bit larger than the resonator opening. Connected it to a 3" dryer hose and then placed it down behind the headlight. Seems to work fairly well, definitely breathes a lot more than just the Iceman. Throttle response has increased quite a bit, or was that just because of the FC TB??

Maybe . . . could pass for stock upon basic inspection, eh?
Photo does not show very well that the little triangle hump gizmo in front of the stock snorkle has had the backside(facing snorkle) cut away and a metal screen siliconed in place.
I'm getting enough cool air for my needs, after all this is a fun to drive "econobox" I purchased for a 800km drive I do for work every third week.
Back when I had my 71 Duster 340 (my god that was thirty years ago), there was a factory "Direct Connection" line of parts that with some careful selection allowed a stock looking motor. It also allowed me to embarass a few mopar 383's and chevy 396's, they had chrome splashes all over their engines and could not understand how this "kid" with his "stock motor" could be quite so quick.
It mostly came down to airflow through the motor for power( I would like a set of headers for the focus) but total package - trany, driveline needed to be considered. Perhaps the best performance part was the skill or lack thereof the "Driver"
Why spend $$ so you can look fast, just be fast!

Without the resonator box, my car felt like it wasn't quite as responsive as with the box, and actually felt like it had a bit of a lag. I installed a Diablo chip Wednesday (Thanks to Cajun for the hook up) and drove around for a day WITHOUT the resonator box.The car really felt like it was still lagging more than when it was stock WITH the box still on. Then Thurday night I reinstalled the resonator box, and it really seems to be that my car is more responsive WITH the box. Any thoughts?
