Blew my motor to hell today. See my post in OT. After dealing with my crappy doctor, I decided to relieve my anger by dropping in my turbo SPI. Engine is completely built but sitting in a corner. called my bro and dropped it in. still no fuel management solution so I just unplugged the vacuum line from the fuel pressure sensor and let it ride. I figured Id blow the motor but F it. T3 turbo totally unregulated on a stock SPI motor. held up for about 20 minutes. total damage so far is ruined block, melted pistons, broken rod, burned valves, warped exhaust mani, trashed impeler, wasted front tires, dead MAF, and likely blown transmission. I already have the dead engine pulled and should have the old NA beast reinstalled by morning. Still mad as hell and hostile but at least there is a corvette owner in san antonio that will never laugh at a modified focus again.
 
I dont know whether to laugh or to cry or to go take a dump!!

Sounds like you had fun until KABOOM!!

Was the motor built or just stock rods/pistons/etc??

WTF!!!!

Man, why the hell would you do something like that? If you unplug the vacuum line to the sensor it will give you less fuel than if you didn't!

Why not just set it to a low boost on the wastegate so it's less risky?

It's not april 1st yet right?

oops. I thought no vacuum was richer. I had the nitrous program on so it was prally normal then. I didnt baby it because I wanted to destroy it. The motor had never been installed because it needed a fuel solution and a boost controller. The T3 was way too big anyway. I got super pissed and decided I needed a some fun. My bro and I dropped the motor and trans in and I set about looking for a fight. too bad it didnt last more than about 20 minutes. made it to 16psi before it exploded. I wonder how much more pressue it could build if it didnt pop.

Engine was completely stock. bought it on ebay for 200 bucks. After I settled in on the TDi or 1.8T, I gave up on the engine and was ready to part it out. now its in parts.

I have no idea what my actual number were but I bet if I go back to Wurzbach parkway there is a 2 inch deep pile of rubber that speaks volumes. Turbo is so much better than NA.

I almost want to do it again. someone send me a motor and a new T3 and I'll make a video.

I put the turbo SPI in all half ass. the intercooler was hanging and not secured. totally off center. the J pipe was rubbing and I think the maybe I should have bought a new thermostat. oh well, It was fun as hell. just for future reference, pay more attention to FM and internals. The good news is, the SPI can take 16 psi and 35 shot for about 20 minutes at WOT. Maybe you could get away with 8 or ten consistantly.
 
I just unplugged the vacuum line from the fuel pressure sensor and let it ride.
I'm pretty sure all that did was run WOT fuel presure all the time. So WOT was no differant, but idle was rich...not much good there.

Edit: You dont "need" a boost controller. A boost controller can only raise boost not lower it, what you needed was a modified waste gate.
 
True jeff but if he left the vacuum line plugged in his injectors would have seen 16 psi more fuel pressure at 16 psi than they were pumping out at the time. They would have been fed like 58 psi instead of the 43 or so they probably had thinking the car was at wot and NA. Probably wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway.
 
I'm thinking there was enough fuel for the first 5-6 psi the other 10 psi just went to waste causing a super lean condition, making the EGT about 2000Âş. So you actally did'nt feel 16 psi worth of power...not with out 16psi worth of fuel to go alone with it.

Just for exsample, I'm running 6psi. I upgraded to 24# injector's at WOT and full boost I'm pushing 60 psi of fuel pressure.
So 19# injectors at 45psi is noth'in at 16psi.

I blew up the motor cause I was mad and I wasnt going to use it anyway. the motor still had alot of work that needed to be done and it was taking up space. yeah, I could have parted it out but what the fun be in that? I mean damn, we have shows dedicated to watching stuff break so I think my only fault was not going and getting a video camera for the event.

I forget who said what but yeah I m sure 16 psi was doing nothing but leaning it out. The T3 was too damn huge and the GST wastegate was not right. Like I said, it needed more work that was never gonna get done. It drove pretty good around town but my WOT run was the death of it.

My intention was to pop it but after it didnt break in 15 miles, I thought I might have just installed a motor that would survive. I started to think that maybe I just crossed the barrier and I should go home and tweak the fuel so it would last. Then certain circumstances and a bi-polar problem caused me to put it through its paces. It was an impressive failure. First motor Ive ever blown and I'll never forget the sound as long as I live. Kinda like being in your first crash. Its almost a sickening noise. well it would be if you cared about your engine. I think a that junkyard powertrain went out in the most admirable way possible. I salute you noble SPI motor and blown T3.

Sorry I haqvent been back to update till now. I ran into problems reinstalling the old beast and it took me like 20 hours to get it all back together. I havent even slept yet.

Finally got it rebuilt and tested. All is operating normally and the car is good again. Im just glad I didnt have enough time to get used to the turbo, otherwise Id probablly be disappointed with it.

I dont want to cross the line but I will just say that while I was still grossly outpowered, there is a vette guy that will never go half throttle again.

for the same reason you have a zetec and post in a SPI forum. Because I can.

I really dont see what is so unclear about the whole thing. I had an unfinished turbo motor taking up space. I was never going to finish it so it needed to be gotten rid of. I was mad that day and destroying something sounded cool. For 20 minutes the ride was fun and when it popped, it was even more fun.

I enjoyed myself and did what no-one on this damn forum has done yet...... drive a turbo SPI. well except for the 2 escort guys but you get my point.

I never thought Id get this kinda hostility for it. I thought people would be amazed that I did it and amused at it. Now I find out how many humorless SOBs this board really has.
