ok what exactly needs to be done to beef up the atx for a supercharger or turbo. my guess would be a new valve body, torque converter, and a tranny cooler. My goal is to have the foci pull a 14sec pass(i will be happy with that), and i know for damn sure that won't happen unless i work the motor and tranny. any recomendations? you think its reachable under $5,000?

lentech and performance automatics both have kits out

the TC and valvebody are most crucial

Lentech's has been tom tested, PAs is being tested by precision turbo right now, at about 150 less HP

yeh definitly beef it up...mine just blew today lol...im buying a transmission from Lentech Automatics, great reputation and good prices. Check out my post in zetec performance to see if anyone gives info for me that would be helpful for u too!

Have the transmission rebuilt with extra clutches and new rings. This is where the 4F27E has its weakness.
Either Raybestos or Alto (Redeagle) clutches work great.
If you are looking for 1/4 mile times than, add high-stall torque converter, and transbrake to your shopping list. The transbrake will alow you to launch like a manual. With these components you can match the performance of a manual transmission on the drag strip.

also,
Ford Racing just released a performance valve body (M-7100-FVB) for the 4F27E Focus transaxle, $399- can't beat that.

thegreat1 - are you ATX?
Lentech needs your old valve body and they just rework it. I am almost positive they do not sell you a new valve body.
And FR price is retail, the Ford parts department quoted me somewhere around $350.

I got my tranny from Lentech, love it. But in light of the new FR torque converter and input shaft, I would probably do a rebuild with extra high performance clutch packs, adn the FR valve body/input shaft, if I had to do it over again. Rebuilds with a reputable tranny builder will run around $800-$1000 but will not usually include the valve body becaus emost rebuilders don't know enough about the Focus tranny to mess with the valve body (which is why I ended up buying the whole thing from Lentech instead of going th rebuild route).

Get a high stall tc and lockup if you are drag racing and do NOT have the traction control option (lockup will not work according to Lentech with traction control).

hey guys thanks for the feedback. So i guess this can definately be reached under the $5,000 mark. should i mod my tranny even for mild bolt-ons? b/c from what i hear even with the basics i/h/e and cams, the tranny's have been known to act up. i have been really nice to my foci, i do routine oil changes, and regular maintanence so my 45,000mi foci transmission is in good shape, and iam not looking to ruin it, just make it faster, and more reliable. BTW is there a ford racing focus catalog?

Precision is also testing a Lentech ATX

If i had it all to do over again i think id buy a Lentech

Trans are kinda like turbo kits you can buy a piece here and there and it adds up to less , than you start to put it togather and there is this and that that comes into play then you dont have a warranty and ends up costing you as much or more

Than you add in shipping and ? and ? and ? it just never ends i know i have dont it that way before

Buy a ready to go Lentech save some time and money

That is just misinformation. Much as I love my Lentech, you don't buy Lentech to save time and money??!!

You pay $200 for shipping EACH WAY (that's $400 total) because you have to return your stock tranny with a Lentech/Peformance Automatic/Level10. Mail order tranny from Lentech s/h cost = $400, local rebuild = $0.

If you want to make sure you are getting the same upgrades, buy the Lentech rebuild pack.

The important thing is to find a transmission rebuilder that you can trust to do a good job. If you can't find someone good, you should not risk it, just buy the Lentech ready made.

I did not see any misinformation there.
And before anyone buys parts for a tranny rebuild they need to try to find a good shop that will do it. And that wont be so easy. I agree with Tom it will be less of a hassel to just get a complete tranny.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Just buy an already built transmission. I've seen and heard of guys have to rebuild their trans over again just after a few thousand miles. I don't trust anyone with my trans unless they're truly pro.

I had a conversation with someone last night that would disagree with you after having his Focus down for 4 months and 2 rebuilds he is now going to talk to Lentech about a ATX

I dont think i misinformed anyone at all ,You can save time because they will send you a built ATX so it is sitting there and ready to install in one day and you dont have to wait for your local shop to install all your parts 2 days to 2 months

Save money by lentech warranty taking over in most cases if you shop around and buy your own parts you dont have a warranty on most of your ATX ,If you have to do it over there will be many parts that you the owner will have to buy again

So yes among QUALITY and RELIABILITY you can save TIME and MONEY

Tom

I think I'd like to pretty much agree with Tom. Only thing that would bother me is that in an event of a bad part from Performance Automatics or Lentech you would have to ship the trans back to them and pay for shipping. Which would suck. The chances of this should be very low but as they say....[censored] happens.

It just depends on whether you have someone who is good with tranny rebuilding. Clearly, I would not recommend that someone take their tranny to Aamco and have it rebuilt. But if you can find a good rebuilder, I do not see why you would do mail order. A good rebuilder will stand behind their work too, maybe more so than Lentech since Lentech does not do installs mail order

. As an example, when my Lentech was installed it leaked as soon as they turned the car out -- all of the fliud came right out. Had to take the tranny out, find the leak, and get new seals, costing me an extra $400 mostly labor. The shop swore that the seals where bad, Lentech swore the show screwed up the install .. in the end I paid the bill and did not get reimbursement from Lentech 'cause I did not know who was right. My point is, find a good shop and don't trust that just because you got it from Lentech that it will be worry free.
