That's what happened to me.......swapped out TB and used a TPS sendsor I had laying around.....cars idle was horrible, idled really high.....turns out the sensor was no good.....check it out

The Focus TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) is a piece of garbage. I broke mine when installing my FC TB. They are very fragile, and if your not ultra careful, it will break and your revs will hang like you are describing.

I'd recomend going to your local Ford dealership and just ordering a new one. I paid around $18 for mine. Not too bad. Just be super careful installing the new one, and try not to turn the sensor at all until it's mounted on the TB.

Also make sure that the sensor is in the correct pair of TPS holes on the TB. The directions the TB came with should be clear on what holes to use depending on your model year and transmission.

Good luck, and let us know if the problem remains.

We broke my friend's (SVTADAM) TPS while mounting his FC 70mm TB saturday. at 5pm. after all the parts stores closed.

Opened it up (it was broken anyway) and it turns out that the potentiometer connectors are super fragile, and are only held to the post by two TINY plastic arms. The plastic arms broke, and one of the two metal prongs snapped.

2.5 hours later (Solder / JB weld / Industrial glue) it went back on, and worked.

Funny, it's only $26 or something from ford parts.

My RPMs hung when i first installed it so i turned my idle control down all the way and no mo probs but it does sound a lil "cammy" at idle i like it

the Throttle Position Sensor, or TPS is a sensor that attaches to the side of the throttle body to determine how open it is.... it relays this information, it the form of voltage, back to the ECU so it can use the MAFS to determine how much fuel the engine needs.

If you put it on incorrectly, then you send the wrong info to the ECU, and it tells the engine to do the wrong thing....

The sensor itself is notorious for being a fraile piece of work, and you can damage it just by tinkering with it. Fortunately they're (usually) cheap to replace.

Easy to break, easy to replace...seems like the reason a lot of stupid little Ford parts are ridiculously more expensive than they need to be.

Back on topic, I had the hanging revs problem with my FC T/B as well, but as soon as I went back to stock it cleared up (no, it wasn't because I put it on wrong - I checked it literally a dozen times, and unless the instructions were wrong, it was on there correctly). Is there something about the FC T/B itself that causes the TPS to read differently?

I think that one thing thats been proven is that the TB doesn't open 100% at WOT... dunno if the computer tries to compensate for that somehow which leads to hanging idle

When I was talking to one of the guys at FC a while back I mentioned this and he said that they were just following FORD's different TB designs for all their cars. He said that they made variations to all their TB's as different Foci had different TB's designs.

hmmm ok so i changed out the tps and everyting was fine until i go in for my inspection and ford has this written down as to why i failed:

EMISSIONS SYSTEMS TESTS FAILED. EVAP MONITORS, AND EGR MONITORS NOT SET. PERFORMED EEC TEST, FOUND TP SENSOR READING OPEN, PARTIAL THROTTLE AT ALL TIMES. TP RESISTANCE AT 1.4. SHOULD BE AT .2-.4 AT CLOSED THROTTLE.

now i need to get it fixed and back in they say they wont make me pay if i get it back in quick and not a week or two....confused i spent all the cash on the fc tb and i get problems

? is the tps in right, did you play w/ the butterfly control screw,is there a vac leak??? check these! also to fix the 100% wot(its alittle wack but works)bend out the cable plate a bit!!!see if these fix it!

Is the inspection expensive? If so, I would re-install the stock TB and repeat the inspection (at no charge). If the TPS is still out of whack, it would be a lot easier to just have them fix it to pass inspection. Then you can put the FC TB back on and take your time getting it right.

I suppose it won't hurt to ask if they can fix the TPS with the FC throttle body installed, but they might charge a small fortune since it's not a stock setup. I don't THINK the aftermarket TB is an emissions no-no, but it depends on your location.

Did'nt you have a check engine light on as all of this was going on?

It would depend on how soon after the TB installation he had the car inspected. Some of the PCM's self-tests have to discover a problem more than once before lighting the MIL. For example, try disconnecting your TPS wiring plug. The MIL won't light right away. On the second driving cycle, it lit up (on my ZX3). Ditto for the MAF sensor.

ok i am thoroughly fed up with this throttle body. took it off got inspected and now i was playing with it today. the tps is in the right hole the butterfly screw is just touching and as a last resort i was adjusting it more and less because my car was all but stalling. and i get the same crappy results the tps actually goes bad while on the throttle body!

as a side note you can fix the tps all you have to do is pry out the inner metal piece and CAREFULLY bend out the metal prongs and reset the black piece in the center and it works again i figured that out AFTER THREE TPS SENSORS...

i sent an email to focus central about it but got no reply it looks as if they do not stand behind their products i will be giving a call monday i was hopeful up until today where everything i tried i couldnt get good results and i dont know why.

looking into the ported throttle bodies. with those the metal plate is not enlargened correct? i love the feel when it is on the car but it idles like crap and eventually breaks the sensor. i am so agrivated i am gonna go freak out..........
