Your opinion on the Saab 9-2X

Some of you may know that I am in search of a new car and I am so undecisive. I love the subaru impreza and the impreza wrx but I think I like the Saab 9-2x more.

I also like the longer warranty and free scheduled maintenance for 2 years....It has a lot more standard features than the impreza too.

What do you all think about the saab 9-2x.

I think its for the type of ppl that feel if they drive a mid-class car that they will be hurting their reputation, therefor they go out and buy the EXACT same car but under a different more luxious name.

Just like ppl who buy a G35 over a nissan...they buy it for the Inifiniti name and doorhandles.

or ppl who buy a Lexus whatever over a toyota camry.

i personally think if ya want a WRX, get the real deal.

While it's true that some people are simply concerned with a "badge", there are reasons to buy upscale versions of cars.

The 9-2X is a decent car, a bit pricey considering it's underpinnings. But, you do get a lot nicer interior and other creature comforts that the Impreza can't touch. Also, some people think the Saab looks better.

I will say that they are not selling well. As of about 6-8 weeks ago they had sold less then 100 of them nationwide!

Also, remember that THIS 9-2X will be short-lived. A new 9-2X is coming along shortly that will still be developed on the Subie platform but will have completely different sheetmetal than it's sister car.

This car was kind of a short term fix for Saab's serious sales spiral. You can look at it two ways. Either this 9-2X will be a unique car, i.e. not very many produced and sold... or you can say that it will be dated in 12-16 months.

If you drive it and like it and can get a good deal on one I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. It's a proven car in it's Subie variation.

Im not really into the badge thing but the fact that it is a wrx underneath is what i care about. I like a lil bit of luxury in my vehicle I think the seats are nice in the saab...and like i said in my first post i like the longer warranty and the free scheduled maintenance......i never have the extra 25-30 when i need an oil change.

I am going to look at them tonight in person. And maybe take one for a test drive on saturday.

I am soooo indecisive...lol

based on those reasons i would agree that the 9-2X would be a good option for you.

it can still be modded mechanically just like the WRX, right? like same engine and suspension stuff?

...besides, if you get bored of the Saab exterior you can always get aftermarket fenders/headlights/bumper from Subaru lol

And if they want a back seat. G35 is like a 350Z 2+2. I know i would buy a G35 over a 350Z for that reason

Nicer in the sense that an SVT's interior is nicer than a ZX3. If I could've gotten the suspension and engine in a much cheaper ZX3...

I'm a sucker for a bargain...I don't see that the Saab is worth much more. Yeah, the Saab is nicer inside, but the Rex isn't exactly a POS.

The Saab isnt too much more than the Subaru...
Subaru MSRP=24k Saab MSRP=26k
and the saab has 4 piston brake calipers up front and a lil lower ride height..

MORRISON: I thought this would only be a couple of grand more than an equivalent WRX, which I think would put it around $26,000, $28,000 max. If indeed that price is accurate, I think Saab could have a problem on its hands. The reason I say so is because the 9-2X is clearly nothing but a WRX (thanks, Captain Obvious), and I don't think Saab is making any attempt to cover up the fact.

Price questions aside, I like this car-maybe more than I like the WRX. The 9-2X feels a little more compliant, sounds a little quieter and gives an overall more refined, luxurious feel. But it still goes just as hard and fast, still handles well. I think the subtle exterior mods work well, though the cabin gets the typical Rainier-like makeover: just a nicer radio face and some seemingly higher-quality plastic trim pieces. I think the seat-cover material may be a bit different, but I'm not sure. Overall, there isn't such a big improvement in quality as to surprise you too much, and I don't think the car's overall character is different from the WRX's in any meaningful way.

Which brings me back to my initial question. If it only costs $2,000 or so more than the Subaru, I can see a certain type of buyer making the leap. But if you have to spend $4,000 to $5,000 more, I don't think it's worth it.

RAYNAL: Mr. Morrison makes a semi-valid point: It's true that $30,000-plus is too high. Where I differ slightly is that this car shouldn't cost any more than a WRX. It shouldn't be "a couple of grand more." It should be exactly the same. Why pay more for a Saab badge and slightly softer suspension and more sound-deadening material over a Subaru badge? Badge snobs will do it, the rest of the thinking car consumers will scoff, and go with the Subaru. As they should.

WRXs are good cars. Maybe even great cars. As is this one. There's plenty of power, oodles of traction, decent build quality, and in the form of a station wagon it's muy practical. Plus it's a lot of fun to drive.

But in my opinion there is absolutely no reason to pay a premium for the Saab badging.

Dammit my GF talked me into the Subaru...lol.......I will go by there on the way home from work to look at the remaining 04's.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH .........new car buying is more stressful than meeting with the District service rep about my busted ass motor.

I bought a G35Sedan not because of it's status...I did it cause I have a small Pee-Pee.

Altima, FWD, fully loaded is about the smae $$ as a entry level G35.

G35, has a better interior,RWD and not as common as the Altima or Maxima,.nicer line and NO ALTEZAS.

Im hijacking my own thread but what does this mean(the bolded words)

Fuel & Ignition System Sequential multi-port fuel injection. Engine management with integrated self-diagnostics and adaptive driving habits capability. Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). Distributorless electronic ignition.
