I recently purchased a 2002 SVT Focus with an AEM cold air intake. At lower rpms, going up hills and during cold starts the car has a "loping" idle and hesitates. When warm the condition is much better but it still is not as driveable as, I hope, Ford meant it to be. The car also revs to 1500-2500 after a cold startup.

I have heard these systems are great for more HP at higher RPM (i.e. Racing and Highway) but "lean the fuel/air mixture out" at lower RPMs.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the system more drivable?

Would anyone have a stock air box they would want to sell? Or know of a website that would have SVT parts?

Unfortunately the previous owner only kept half the stock box and the dealer only sells the whole thing for $238.00.

Thanks,

If you can't figure it out I still have my stock airbox in storage. I think its missing one of the screws that hold the top on. If you need it let me know, you can have it for cheap, I don't even have a focus anymore. You might want to figure out if you have the most recent flash from Ford. Thats about the only thing I can think of that might help.

Do you know if your car has been flash to the YRFO code yet?
This may be some of the problem. Chances are you are still on the RLAx code. Contact the previous owner and ask him if he had the dealer flash the ECU to the YRFO code.

Sunce you got the SVT with the CAI already on, it's hard to tell if this is a problem with then CAI or is another SVTF with driveability/tune issues. If the driveability issues remain after you re-install the stock airbox, then I would suggest getting the ECU update.

I'd check the flash before you spend any money buying OEM equipment. I think ax0ns site shows you how to check the flash version in the odometer diagnostic mode. I'll check, one sec.

I think it might be the "dt" value but I don't remember what the different values are for the different flashes. I did it before. You would have to get people to post what their value is and what tune they have.

You could always go to your dealer and tell them you are having cold start issues. They should reflash with the most recent version. Not sure what kind of warranty they gave you. Hope this helps.

I think if you got the current flash you would be okay. The 1500-2000 idle is normal they all do that. However you still don't know if there was any water or anything else that got sucked up in the intake. However I would start with the flash. Good Luck

first thing I would do is go to Radio Shack and get a can of spray electronics parts cleaner and then take the Mass Air sensor out and spray off the sensor wires to clean it up. Sometimes the oil from the K&N filter gets on the sensor wires and causes erratic readings.

Once you have it cleaned, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the computer so it will relearn then engine conditions.

The Mustang guys do this all the time when using the cold air intakes. I just did mine with AEM to keep it clean.

That is possible, however if there was any oil that got into the MAF then you will need a new one. I have seen it many times were people put there K&N filters on the car wet. Then when you step on the gas all that oil is sucked into the MAF, which destroys them. However it is worth a shot to clean it.
