I just got back from driving 5 hours in the rain and just as I got into town there was a river about 1 1/2 feet deep going across the road. I crossed it and my car started to stumble and idle weird. I shut it off immediately and let it sit for a few minutes. When i started it back up it it was doing the same thing for a minute or two but then started to clear up. I most likely sucked water in the intake. Car is lowered with CAI. It seems to run fine now. Think it will be ok? Is there anything I should do?

pull the valve cover off and look for rust and foamy oil on the intake camshaft. If you dont see any than you survived the ordeal.

get a bypass valve.

Its on a duratec with a maf and can't use a bypass valve.

ok. I didnt know duratecs couldnt use a bypass valve. still, pull the cover and check for signs of water intrusion. I have some really nice pics of a zetec Im working on right now that has a hole in both sides of the windage tray from the number 2 rod snapping in half due to hydrolock.

That looks horrible. How long did it take to get like that. I don't think i sucked up alot of water. Is it possible the water went in the exhaust? lol. I have the splash gaurd on with the tube to the front of the bumper. I had to drive it to work today and going to change the oil tommorrow. Won't have time to pull the valve cover off untill monday. But my car runs perfect. Hopefully it stays that way. Is this something that takes time rust?

sometimes they still run fine.. but youll give it a little extra gas at some point and the weakened parts will break... only time will tell..how did you go through this puddle? .. at worst you coulda turned the engine off and coasted through if you saw it..

well that engine popped almost right away. It died in the puddle and after it was restarted it tried to compress the water and since water dosent compress, the rod broke. the rust probably formed soon after due tot he grade of metal used in the camshafts. when we pulled the engine out there was literaly water pouring out of the vacuum lines on the intake manifold. if you look down the spark plug hole, you can see water still sloshing around in the number 2 cylander.

If yours hasnt broken yet than youve made it thru the worst and are probably ok. but you DO NOT want to have water traped in the intake manifold.

A splash gaurd is not a safegaurd it does nothing against standing water. be carefull out there.

Thats was a really stupid thing to do unfortunatly. You should be aware of the location of the cai and the puddle. If there is a next time, you need to relize where your cars intake is and that in will inhale water just as well as it does air. You need to find an alternate route of try to find a good air shild to protect it.

The puddle/river was after a 5 hour drive not far from my house and there was no other way around. I Didn't think it was as deep as it was. I turned it off as soon as it stumbled so hopefull it didn't suck up much.

The water wasn't that high but it was flowing fast and you could not coast or push the car through. Trust me, I am already mad at myself. I suppose I should of just slept there overnight untill the water was gone

It was more like a river. I think that my tube to the splash guard funnled water into the box because the water wasn't higher then the intake. The water didn't look that deep. I am just retarded for going through it in the first place. My fingers are crossed, so hopefully all is well. It seems to run great though. No symptoms yet

the stock drainhole sucks, thees a huge chance of water just sitting in the shield at low speeds.. i checked once after washing my car and spraying water into the tube... there was a lot of water in the shield...

its impossible for water to get stuck under teh filter now (btw for all of you that thinks it magically stops water and my thing is just a hole for water to go into.. i dont care what you think

I think its a good idea. I bet if I had that, the water would have drained out and my intake wouldn't have took a nice bath. I will probably just drill some more holes for the water to drain out.

All I can say is my brother walked in and siad, WTF he is driving through water thats prolly fast enoguht to move the car(if ya cant coast throught it and by your discription a river) not water you should be crossing, he said "he's one of the idiots that on rescue 911 being pulled from the midle of the water atop there car because they think there car is a boat and not a car!" I thought that was pretty funny.

I don't think its funny at all

The "river" was barely high enough to go into the intake tube which I did not think it was. There was no question in my mind that I could cross it. But as I said the river was at the end of a 5 hour drive with no way around. It was also at about 3am and I had work the next day. I didn't post this so "idiots" like you could laugh at me. I am plenty pissed at myself as it is.

Is it possible that the MAF just got a little water on it and that caused it to stumble untill it dried out? cause I really don't think I could have sucked in very much water.

Plus the thought of some dude being pulled away from a focus by a helicopter would have me on the floor laughning, not that it would be you, any one just hearing " and in other news a man was pulled of his ford focus by local police helicopter after the car got stuck in the middle of a river, he was rescued and is in good condition" OTFL that would be great, you didnt go through a river but come on you know youd laught too if you saw it

and BTW we all make mistkes you made on no big deal, you now just have to assure your cars ok do an oil change check the oil, pull of the intake check it out, maybe take it to a profesional for there offical opinion on it, and make sure not to drive through water at all even if you "think" you can make it
