This was my dads 65 Fastback, completed to look just like one of the original 37 R-model Shelbys. He also had an original 65 Shelby that was restored to original, but was never driven on the track. Many others as well, including a 64 Falcon sprint that many of the socalers have seen. Now all gone.

My father is retiring and needs the money.

He sold it to a gentleman in England that will race it in vintage racing overseas.

My dad was pretty sad to see it go. Man was it fun to drive; there is nothing like driving a live rear axle, leaf springed, worm-and-sector steering box, vintage iron.

You say one of 37.
Do you mean one of 37 set up by Shelby IN '65 for Race Teams?
IIRC, the "R" model became an actual Designation in '66, therefore there weren't '65 "R" models, just "Factory Race cars".
I may be wrong, and I know it sounds picky... just thinking.

To meet certain homologations (sp?) they had to build over 35. 37 were built to the "R" specs in 65...

R specs consisted of but not limited to.....

Fiberglass apron front bumper delete.

Lexan side windows with aluminum frames and lexan rear air gap window. Side window had a strap and no crank BTW.

Aluminum Rear quarter block offs.

Spun Aluminum Type, Raydyot mirrors, as opposed to the chrome bullet shelby mirrors.

R-model Dash, with radio delete.

No interior whatsoever (ie, no carpet, headliner, window cranks etc), except R-model front bucket, lighter wieght steering wheel than standard Shelbys.

Rear fuel block off plate.. Vehicle was fueled through trunk.

Originally they ran no Fan or air cleaner.

Since the vehicle was never sitting in traffic, a fan was not needed. The carb sat in a enclosure that mated up to the scoop on the hood.

Larger radiator.

7 quart gated sheet metal oilpan... reg shelbys have cast aluminum pan.

Steel, tall breather Valve covers (r-model).

Isky "Lemans Cam".

Oil cooler.

American Racing Torque thrust "d" wheels.

Heavy duty wheel studs, with 3in long lug nuts.

Goodyear "bluestreak" racing bias ply tires.

Side exit straight through exhuast.

Koni race shocks, frt\ rear

Removal of rear bumper.

Some other performance and wieght reduction goodies I cant remember at this time.

That car is sick! I would be so sad to see it go. Hopefully the knew owner keeps it up.

what did it sell for?

nice car though, i would be sad to see it go also.
My dad gave it away at 35k.. just the engine itself was around 20k..

A nice stock 65 Fastback goes for 20k alone.

My parents are retireing and need the money. My dad just doesnt want to deal with keeping them up. I was sad to see it go myself.

Very nice, but why go to all the trouble of making it resemble an original Shelby, then build the engine completely un-original? The car is beautiful, but I would have stuck with a hp 289 solid lifter motor for a true "classic" experience!
