Focus sales were down 39.6% for may and down 13.9% for the year.

Focus sales are on track to be down to only 180,000 Focus this year.

Down from 208,000 in 2004 and dwon from 286,000 in 2000.

Not really surprising. The so called front end and dash "redesign" took away from the edginess that was the trademark of the Focus.

Let Ford learn a lesson.

Then again, given Ford's surrender monkey history (think Taurus, Thunderbird, Continental, Mark VIII, Probe, Cougar, Contour, ...) I fear this will prompt them to give up on yet another once-successful car.

I originally wated to post something like Focus sales are up in may, like they were almost up in april. It seems they have fallen through the basement. I hate to admit it but i am warming to the redesign, I still hate it, but it no longer causes me to vomit. I'd hope they would at least level off. It is a mo win situation for us, as long as sales suck there is no incentive to make it better. If ssales were to increase it would embolden those who think the the 05 redesign was good idea.

either way we lose.

The reason why I have hope is that even if they can the Focus, the way the market is trending away from large trucks and SUV's Ford HAS to have a vehicle in that part of their car line-up. If they did away with the Focus and replaced it with something comparable or better, like a Fiesta, would it be so bad?

no, but can ford not have a car between the Fiesta and the Fusion.

If they did then that would mean:

Fiesta - (Focus?) - Fusion - Mustang - (Crown Vic, if you want to consider it part of the category)

Seems like a large car line-up compared to other companies, especially when you consider there's 3 kinds of Mustangs, and perhaps an SVT Fusion.

Now that I'm looking up there it would seem reasonable to switch the Focus to the C1 platform sooner that later this way there'd be more continuity in the line-up up to the Mustang, from a production standpoint, that is...

if they are going to make all these front ends look alike it would not surprise me that the styling cues would go puke to lots of potential buyers. not surprised sales are down...o well, bye bye focus in US soon??
the focus sells because its a cheap economy car, not because they want the c1 or the old look back. 99% of american consumers could care less about either of those.

Its still smaller than toyota's lineup.

Echo, corolla, camry, avalon, solara, matrix.

and that not including the hot new Scion brand. With it's 3 entries.

The Point I think people miss is that IT is no longer posible to build one car that can sell 300,000 units the market is fragmented, people want a greater variety of cars. Toyota offers a wider variety of vehicle than Ford does. they are in almost every market segment, so they are not as vulterable as ford is if the market's tastes change, ( example Full-size and mid-size SUVs)

flexible platforms are the key to creating the diverse lineup of cars Ford needs.

C1 is a leap of faith.
I will say this, C170 can be made to be as good as C1, but C170 isn't flexible enough to form the lineup for needs for the future market for small cars and CUVs.

They are turning the Focus into the Escort. I bought mine becase it was cheap, had amazing handling and the interior was surprisingly nice for an economy car. I've been in the 05, while it looks ok from the outside, the interior flatout sucks now.

And they have replaced the SVT with the impotent ST sedan in the performance area

ford will never do what makes sense or what people like. they dont make money on econo cars, no matter what the times call for. so whats it matter to them. the commercials they do tellin u otherwise is fluff.

stop thinking bout the RS, cossie's, awd, c1, turbos, they teased u w/svt-its not comin back...give it up. wont happen here.

local ford lot, the foci sit out front, but its the same old cars just moved around to not look as stale as they already are.

Coming fron an 01 foci to a mazda 3 05. Im not surprised. The new design is utter crap. I loved the way my 01 looked. And, up to 04. Ford is just dumb thats all. I could be wrong. But, I think the focus was one of the first american sport compact cars to really catch on. In the tuner market. Back when, I bought mine. It was my car of choice. Out of anything else out there. The aftermarket is still pretty strong for the foci. How it will be in a few more years. Im not sure. And, if the svtf was still being made. I would have bought one.

Ford does offer variety cars, only american consumers like big and powerful car. that is why ford usa don't import this euro stuff.
for example, peugeot came in us market but they ruined.
that might be the reason why ford usa don't import small cars.

i agree that 05 focus is kinda not matching on the front end and rear end.
ford usa made a huge mistake., they tried to save money by changing front end only. this way, there is not lots of money needed to invest new model.

i mean mk ii is completely different look, to produce mk ii here, ford usa had to replace factory machine and this costs a lot.

reasons buying focus??
1. wrc fan??
2. affordable, (lots options already included compare to other competitors)
3. fun to drive??mayb??

They should make the focus a Hybrid car.... That would sell well riht???

i've been reading about hybrid cars...for the premium they charge over the non-hybrid versions they did some math and found that you really aren't saving any money until you crack 100,000 miles of driving, kinda stupid in my opinion

I beg to differ. Ford brought the focus over because Escort sales sucked, and the car had a horrible image. They had NOTHING to lose by coming out with a completely different car. By taking a risk, they sold a LOT of foci for a profit. The car sold on its own merits, not because it was “cheep”

Incentives were “cool” things like sending personalized “gifts” for buying the car like a mug, and watch, or CD case that said “focus” on it. This made people feel positive about there car buying experience and little things like that went a long way to make people happy with FoMoCo.

The sales of the focus are now based on the fact its cheep, and has a huge rebate on it. It’s completely boring, and impersonal. It is now an appliance that takes you from point A to point B.

Price is not everything “value” is. You would have thought ford would have learned that by now with the focus.

No that’s how AMERICAN car companies try to sell small cars. Toyota, and Honda give you a decent car, at a higher price.

When the focus FIRST came out ford sole ALLOT of them. It also was selling for about the same price as the civic, and corolla. For an AMERICAN car company this was big news, for once they were selling a small car for a PROFIT, not just because they needed to make there mileage goals to offset SUV’s.

After the focus came out in the US, ford NA every year looked at ways to “cheapen” the focus so they could sell them for less. All this did was turn it into any other American car. People saw the car getting cheaper, and decided to just pass it by.

Look at the statistics. Ford sold the MOST foci when they charged MORE for them. When they lowered the price on them they sold less.

Remember when the focus came out EVERY review talked about Euro this and Euro that about the car. FORD said there goal with the car was to make it so someone could drive a focus in Europe as the main car, take a flight to the US and rent one, and not even notice its not there own car. This plan worked VERY well.

The downfall of the focus in NA was ANYTHING ford NA touched. Any part they changed for the US launch had to be recalled, and any “cost cutting” measure they took was very noticeable and caused people to not want the car any more.

Ford needs to come over with a POS b segment car that sells for $10,000 new, and they need to bring over the C1 focus UNTOUCHED from Europe. Hell go as far as to let ford Europe manage the US plant! Then charge what the car is worth.

Now this couldn’t happen for a few years until ford raised the price on the fusion. To get people into that car ford is charging even less than Hyundai for a standard size American car, and the C1 focus would overlap piecewise.

If you guys want to see the C1 focus here, hope the Fusion sells VERY well, and sells as fully loaded modes, so ford keeps loading them up with more stuff each year (and Raising the price) IF all ford sells is base model fusions, we will be stuck with the current platform for quite some time.
