I have a 2002 zx3 that has no sunroof. I have a potentially awesome deal to get an SVT sunroof for hella cheap. I have a problem though. my dad is dead set on "it will leak". In his opinion, you should only get a convertible/sunroof/t-top car if you lease it. Otherwise, you will have problems in a few years. Anybody have a sunrof on their car that they have NEVAR had a problem with? if so, how long? Also, anybody tackled cutting the hole and all for the sun roof? Thanks, L8er Jon

My brother has a 02' ZX3 with a sunroof and he's not had problems with it either. Problems with the sunroofs/covt. leaking are due to poor quality materials the people use. Like, if you take a VW Cabiot(sp?) vs. a Porche, obviously the VW will be more likely to leak.

i have had no problems on my 01

Most t-top roof leaks are from people NOT using the t-tops enough. The rubber looses it memory and canot sufficently expand back into place when it is not taken off regually. My mom had a 280ZX with t-tops and she had this problem. I got lucky and soaked the rubber in vegi oil over night, wiped them down and they were almost like new. I was lucky.

I have an 01 ZX3 with a factory sunroof (crank sunroof might I add...

)

It’s been in 100+ heat, -20 cold, and everything in between.

Not one leak or rattle.

If i can get it all figured out, i think i might be able to talk him into it. BTW, the rents pay for the car, thats why i need his approval. Thanks a lot so far guys! L8er Jon

rember though that these guys are talking about factory installed parts, not do it yourself stuff.

I would hope nothing would leak within 4 years on factory stuff but I believe it will eventually. (you probably won't have the car by then though)

I personally wouldn't add all that weight and possibly reduce the structural stiffness of the car

Mine is coming out and getting welded shut soon. Good luck and take your time. It will be alot of work.

ps VW and porsche... same company

I got a question. Whats the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof. They seem the same to me...?

Not anymore and not for some time, though the exact year now eludes me.

It doesn't matter if there the same company or not. The point is that VW would use a lot cheaper materials compared to materials in a porche.

I don't think it would be an easy job to install an oem SVT
sunroof on your car. The roof of a factory equipped car has a rolled edge as where an aftermarket roof uses a moulding after the roof is cut. This in itself would make it unpractical but of course not impossible to do. I'm not sure about water drain channels, but this could be of some concern. A good sunroof company could install either a high quality crank-type roof or an electric. I had a crank type installed in a car I previously owned and it was great for many years. I kinda ran into this installation by accident since my roof was dented by some unknown object and I figured that I would fix the dent by cutting it out and putting in a sunroof. This being said, I never put in an aftermarket sunroof since my stock roof has NO issues.

Sunroof has a metal cover
Moonroof has a glass cover.
WRONG!

Sunroof just slides back on the roof or pops up and you see the glass when it's open.
Example:

A moonroof slides into the roof of the car and you don't see the glass when it's open.

In the case of the Focus, a moonroof is optional.
