Or not. I'm going to be doing Mt Baldy [Sierra Club Hut trail, summit 10,064 ft] and San Gorgonio [Vivan Creek trail, summit 11,502 ft] in a day to see how long it takes me. Works out to around 27 miles hopefully in less than 12 hours including transport time. I don't have a set date as to when I'm going ATM but it would be in the next 3 weeks.

Before you ask if I'm crazy crazy its for an upcoming race where you do Baldy then Gorgonio then Jacinto all in 24 hours on Sept 8. The race starts at 5AM and it wouldn't be bad except you have to catch the last tram before 8PM at Jacinto. Anyway, if anyone wants to and can keep up, I'd love the company. Re: Anyone up for a nice lazy hike?

wow... thats going to be quite a feat.... I've done Baldy in my youth.... but it was literally all day. Being as how the two peaks are an hour apart driving (on a good day) that makes it damn challenging!

Re: Anyone up for a nice lazy hike?

I'd be up to scout out Mt. Baldy. I'm going to do the 8 mile Baldy run on Sept. 5th (labor day). Whats this 24 hour thing about??
Looks like you guys are doing a different route. You're doing a fire road to the Ski Hut then taking the Devils Backbone trail to the summit. That one has some nice scenery once you get on the 2nd trail.

The 8000m challenge is a competition between my work [REI], A16, and Sports Chalet to see who has the most finishers. Its put on by Jansport and a few other companies. Everyone who starts gets a T-shirt and a Jansport 3L hydration pack; everyone who finishes gets an 8000m challenge fleece vest and is entered to win a free spot in some Mt Rainier climb. Also, the retailer with the most finishers get a summit party. Ed Veisturs might show up as well.

My goal is to finish, not win and I think I should be able to although I know its going to suck. I've done Baldy in 6 hours not pushing hard and Jacinto in about 4. The thing that sucks is I still can't run down the trails very well because my ankle still hasn't fully recovered from a bad sprain about 6 months ago. Gorgonio is the big question mark because its 16 miles and is supposed to an ass kicker, but my trips there keep getting cancled.

Re: Anyone up for a nice lazy hike?

Make sure you get the latest weather reports and such for the area. The snow level was down around 7500' when my son and I were in that area (San Gorgonio) in May. Im sure it wont be that low now but you may still run into some ice areas higher up.

Depending on when you go, we may be up for a good hike.

Re: Anyone up for a nice lazy hike?

Attention: San Gorgonio Sucks! I didn't help things by going to a party, having some drinks, and getting around an hour of sleep before hand either. So yeah, 18 miles round trip [not 16 like I thought] and over 5,400 ft of elevation gained [a lot of that in short hard sections] to the 11,502' summit is tons of fun. Well, not really, but what is fun is watching peoples faces as you haul ass past them. Managed to summit in just over 4 hours including my regular breaks and talking to a few people and make it back to the parking lot in another 3 1/2. Not being able to run down is killing my times, but I still should be able to finish. This is probably the last hike I'll do before the actual race on Sept. 8, but I'll let you guys know how that goes.

Both Baldy and Gorgonio still had ice on them. Very odd sight in August so close to LA.

Re: Anyone up for a nice lazy hike? [Updated with race results]

Well, let me start by saying that 39+ miles in one day makes for a long day. My overall goal was to finish, which I did. Here is the basic rundown of the day:

Sept- 7
11pm- Arrive, dinner

Sept- 8
2:30am- Finally get to sleep
4am- Wake up, tape ankles, eat breakfast, etc.
5am- Start Baldy [9+ miles]
8am- Finish Baldy [wait for an hour for my driver to arrive to take me to San G
Image
]
11am- Start San Gogornio [19 miles]
7:30ish pm- Finish San G [had issues with cramping]
9pm- Barely make the last tram up to Jacinto
10pm- Start hiking Jacinto [11 miles]

Sept 9
2am- Finish Jacinto at base camp, bivy sack time!
6am- Wake up to finish hiking back to tram station

Nice. Jansport did an awesome job running this, I was very impressed. They fed us the night before; had food, water and 1st aid at the base of San G; swag [2L hydration pack, shirt, nice sweatshirt for finishers]; and comp'd Denny's the morning after. The guy running it actually bought me a drink on the 7th because it was my 21st birthday

Overall it was a great experience and oddly enough I'm not sore, just a little stiff. Injury-wise, I fared better than all the other finishers from my store and trained the least. There is a lot more that went on but no one wants to read a huge post, so I'll leave this post as the cliff notes version of the race. Before anyone asks, obviously I didn't get trashed on my 21st birthday but thats coming Saturday

My goodness that's a lot of miles! congratulations on completing it, that's an amazing feat! Best hikes I had were Halfdome, 13 miles in 12 hours, Jersey farmlands 14 miles in 5 hours, and 12 miles across the anza borrego desert in 4 hours. I can't even imagine 3 times that distance in one day!

Re: Anyone up for a nice lazy hike? [Updated with race results]

Well got a couple pics from my friend. Not the best but we were trying to hike, not take great pics. 1st one is on the summit of Mt Baldy. I was hoping you could make out the time on my watch but you cannot, it was probably around 6:40. Second one is coming down from Jacinto. It was gd cold, probably about 35* with a 25mph wind and I didn't have much to wear so I'm pretty miserable in the picture.
