I know it's posted in the SHIFT IT thread... but its not a focus so i post here to.. what would you say is wrong with the LS if it rolls down hill (backwards) in drive?

Jon

with the car running? It should roll down hills backwards in drive to a certain degree, but if its rolling too much the torque converter might be on its way out

like it would roll all the way down. most cars would roll back slightly and then be stopped. this car, if you didnt stop it, would just keep rolling.

The TQ converter can only hold a car so much. If the hill is steep enough there isnt enough TQ for the trans to hold the car. That's why they made a brake pedal.

i dont have any idea of the exact degree of the hill, but my friends and i each have a taurus (sad huh?) and they can do it. would it be because it's rear wheel drive?

Angle has a lot to do with it.
Wife's LS is brand new (2,200 miles) and it rolls back on our drive in drive. Tried it last night. Of course our drive is over 30degrees in the middle. Idle doesn't build and you can tell tranmission doesn't like it- but it's fluid against metal, so all it is doing is generating heat. Wouldn't want to back down a mountain in drive, but auto can roll back in drive. What kind of rpm's is(are) the tararus's pulling? It might be enough to spin torque converter and hold.

LS what? Is it an auto or a manual? SI the engine running or not. Depending on the steepness of the slope it could or couldn't hold at an idle.

My 94 T-Bird would do this. As stated previously it a torque converter limitation, use the brake. DUH! If you were rolling backwards step on the thing that stops you. Or you could tell him to do a custom 5spd swap and then he won't have to deal with torque converters.
