Ran some logs on the car last night, seems the VCT is inversely proportional to the engine speed and load, such that:

low rpm it's around 0-1 +
as engine speed increases (with load, not just speed) it drops off to -54 (WOT pulls)

now i dont know if that's degrees or what (SCT live link software).

it's not a flat line, like i said, it seems to flow with a function of load and engine speed, and as you increase vehicle speed (1, 2, 3 gear WOT) the VCT went from -54 to -40, to -34 to -29, then back up to 0 (let off the throttle.

interpretation?

hell, it'd be easier if i take a screen shot of this
let me get on that

here it is

Interesting. I take it that low RPM pulls are up to 28.432, and high RPM pulls are about 28.432 through to the rest.
If i recall, the VCT tied into our emissions also, but I may be wrong? Could be pulling that much timing to remain emissions compliant.
It definately looks like load and oil pressure are taken into the formula to find the angle the cam is to be held at. But like you said, its hard to tell if the gear is retarding timing up to 54 degrees.
Ray, at what RPM did you shift 1-3 at?
We should also do a comparison with my car. Very interesting though.

it's not for emissions i dont think, that's for the VCT on the exhaust gear on the zx2's i believe. i was shifting around 7k - 7300rpm.

But besides the cat, there are no other emissions controls on this car. I believe there is someting in the tuning of the gear that provides minimal emissions controls.
On a side note, demonfire and I data-logged my car this afternoon. my car is NA with bolt-ons.
There were similarities between his runs and mine. The lowest value for my car was around -40. Not as low as his -60. However, his engine load is much more since his car is blown. My car is around .8ish while his load gets around 1.2ish. That may attribute to the lower values for demonfire's car since it appears that the adj. intake gear is a function of load and RPM. What the formula is I havent the foggiest. Hopefully we can get some answers on this one.

yeah my load goes up to i think 1.318 or so on that run. i'd have to look again.

i dont think that the -40, -60, etc represents absolute retard in degrees, it's gotta be a function of something. still waiting on resolution, however.

I believe it's directly proportional to the NUMBER OF BEANS that Ford was counting as they tuned the engine.

Maybe make the question more direct...

What is the max advance and retard that the VCT gear is capable of?
Has anyone done a measure of this?

Ray, maybe you should call SVT and see if the can give some technical info. I dont know if there is a way that we can manually measure it while on the car.
