And by drivabilty, I mean would you feel comfortable using your mod 300-400hp Foci to drive the kids to school, be a grocery getter, feel OK for your wife to drive, truck clients around, & be in traffic with a Stage III clutch?

The Out Of The Box cars can certainly do that in style.

300-400 hp can be nice and smooth. its not going to be rediculous all the time. and it can be quiet as well. and out of the box 300 hp cars arent exactly plush( most of the time) and if they are plush they are gonna be heavy and the 300 hp isnt gonna be that fun. and they cost a lot more.

Well, tell you what, get back to me after you’ve gotten married & have a family & do your 10 second quarter mile & twisties like a pro driver with your wife & baby & the two year old in the back seat, if you haven’t gutted out the backseat already & have your kids strapped to the trunk lid. Or are you that guy in the VW commercials. Your “FAST” will get you the fastest divorce in history. LOL again!

Just because the car can do that stuff does not mean that it has to be driven like that 24/7. It is possible to drive sanely with family in the car and cut loose on track and in the twisties is it not?

lol, so funny that someone would bring up the marriage factor about everything...

I have a wife, 3 kids, house etc... none the less, its all in the name of fun, remember that too :)

Actually it’s kind of a moot point, after you have a family all the money is going to diapers, baby food & clothes, medical bills, mortgage & child care, you’ll be lucky to be able to change your oil every 3000 miles. LOL

If this is going to turn into a standup comedy routine, I think we should be paid, anyone of you out there who’s enjoying this please send mods.

I hate to come across like I'm ripping you, because thats not my intent at all... but:lol:

I guess my frame of reference must be way off (well I know it is, I'm not buried in debt.) I could afford to be driving a BMW 545.

I don't because I don't want to be in the 'can't afford to change my oil' camp.

Also I don't want to fill the page with quotes but I think you missed what I was getting at in my previous post.

To make d23 competative with GTI's Cobalt SS' etc won't require anywhere near the level of modification you suggested.

The edge of drivability on a d23 will absolutly smoke damn near every car you can find under $30k.

To be competative would require nothing more than a basic turbo kit (lets say $5k just to make it has all the bells and whistles), coilovers and an LSD.

With labor that'll still be under $10k in mods.

You are correct that I'll never recoup the costs of my mods... so what?

By the time I sell my focus it'll be a $500 car :dunno:

I guess I don't understand the mentality that is always "trading up" and always in debt. Frequently rolling "negative equity" into new payments, buying newer cars that one cant afford etc.

I've got two paid for foci that I tinker with, doesn't hurt my budget anymore than most folks beer budget.

Either way if I had a new GTI I'd start moding it and voiding its warrantee too, so thats never been an issue for me.

Besides having grey hair and a focus has gotten me out of several tickets that I'm certain I'd have been hammered with in a GTI.:party:

Something that many of you guys are forgetting, you buy a new car with a decent bit of power stock and it's LEGAL. WE can barely look at the duratec without breaking federal laws.

Chip a gti and make a good bit of power and nobody can tell it isn't stock and you're good to go.

I don't think you can make 400whp with 8k in these little machines. I think the parts alone will put you in the 8k zone. Not to mention the transmission, brakes, suspension, exhaust, fuel system, etc. etc. etc.

As for the hp game, no, there is no winning, cars are purely a debt instrument. The only way you make money is servicing them for other people.
Anyway good luck

fs made 350 whp with their turbo, cosworth rods,FS pistons, and 60 lb injectors, intake mani,cams, and 2.5inch exhaust. Thats rigt around 8k probably and now they just need a few fuel upgrades to make more

That is certainly less than 8k, and all they need to go more is a BAP and bigger injectors

Well, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, I pretty much posted this with “Tongue-In-Cheek” These threads get pretty dry & boring sometimes & I thought I would light the fire a bit to generate some emotional content. I do really love my Foci & will continue to pour money into it (Making the little guy run a little faster—PRICELESS). I just got into this Focus stuff a few months ago & was fasinicated at how much loyalty & devotion given to these little cars...It’s not even like owning a car, more like having a family pet. At a time where loyalty & devotion doesn’t matter as much anymore, this forum & its members are GOLD. I salute all of you for participating & hope no one got too offended by this post, but maybe a few of you should sit down & take your blood pressure. LOL
As always Brian, you’re very cool.

heh, thanks from all of us Brian... I like the pet idea, shoot, my wife named her Gold foci Toasty...

Until you take it in for service, and your warranty is voided....

No, you haven't nearly included the price of labor, that alone would put you past 8k. When somebody can go up and ORDER said combo then I will believe. Otherwise, this is my little breakdown.

Short block (rods pistons etc.) = 1700
Ported head = 1900
Turbo kit = Modified from Stock 4000+ (modified turbo +500, intercooler +500)
Exhaust Kit = 350
Intake = 600
Cams = 200
Injectors = 0, 42s come with package
Maf = 250 (most Maf's this big cost much more), Don't know if it comes with kit.
Tuning = 4+ hrs of dyno time (150$ per hr or about 600 total), because this is NOT an in stock combo.

So a estimated cost of $9600 in parts minus install time and anything else that "might" need replacing or go wrong. Again, this is just a rough estimate of everything. So the 8k well, it might be close, my feeling is that it will probably be closer to 12k. Because you will need suspension upgrades, transmission upgrades. Which will probably run close to 2k.

For me? I'd do exactly this, i doubt the little 2L could make this big power, but if i got anywhere in the time zone of 300whp i'd be plenty happy.

Good luck
