Re: fron shock instal!

very easy.

all you need is a set of spring compressors to get teh springs on and off and that's it.

jack, stands, and regular hand tools and a torque wrench will be all you need.

Re: fron shock instal!

This is a somewhat easy job if.....

1) you have the spring compressor (a must)

2) an impact gun (air or electric. don't matter)

3) everything else DisrupTer911 said.

if you don't have 2), then this MAY, i repeat, MAY be a PITA. getting that top nut loose for the first time can suck. you'll probably need a vise and/or another set of hands to hold stuff still while you try to break it free. oh, and a reguler wrench pretty much doesn't work here. you need an offset closed-end wrench. by that, i mean the ones that, if you look at the wrench from the side, the have a drop down from the handle to the end. you need this to get down in around the nut. you can't use an socket wrench because you need an allen in the top of the strut to hold it in place.

you'll see what i mean when you get in there. also, do youself a favor and replace the top bearing while you're in there. they have a tendency of going bad and now is a great time to replace it just in case. it costs less than $10 through Steve (FORDSVTPARTS).

give it a shot.

Re: fron shock instal!

I second the recommendation to replace the top bearings. I didn't replace mine last summer when I put in my KYBs and now things are starting to creak. I did have someone help me but it was very easy and I probably could do it on my own now in an afternoon.

Re: fron shock instal!

ill chime in to say its def easy.. i jsut did my suspension with my cousin and the fronts were done in like an hour and half 2 hours (fiddling with the compressors) so no fear there

Re: fron shock instal!

I'll chime in here to back up what everyone else has said... and to add that there are no front shocks on a front MacPherson strut car.

:p

Struts = dampers that are a suspension locating link; dampers that are a structural link.

Shocks = dampers that are not a structural link that determines suspension geometry.

Re: fron shock instal!

thanks everyone! and yeah my verbage is poor...but now that they are coming which way di the numbers go? is 1 the stiffest and 4 the softest? or the otherway around...also i was wondering what settings others were using while driving street...

Re: fron shock instal!

I'm pretty sure that most (if not all) of the adjustable aftermarket dampers for our cars use the lower numbers for the softer settings and the higher numbers for the stiffer settings.

Re: fron shock instal!

Correctomundo.

Pn the AGXs, there's four settings for the fronts and eight for the rears. 1 is soft - 4 is full firm for the fronts and 8 is uberfirm for teh rears. The reason that there's more adjustability in the rears than the fronts is that once you get the front damping to your liking, you fine-tune the rear for balance (or oversteer - it's up to you) :p

Most people wind up with 2 front 4 rear as a base setting for cruisin' around town.

Removing the top nut on the struts is a PITA, I just locked a set of vise-grips onto the strut shaft and used a socket on the nut, and it came loose. Since the old struts were being thrown away, using the vise grips with potentially damaging effects from doing so, wasn't an issue for me. Just lock them sumbitches on and crank away on that top nut.

Now, putting the top nut onto the new ones, is a whole different animal. You've got to find a better way to hold stuff still for the re-install. I can't even remember what I did for it, but it went back together no problem for me, and has held ever since.

That's a horrible way to do it. Get a box wrench from an auto parts place for $4 and save yourself a lot of hassle.

you don't even need to do that.

with the weight of the car loading the suspension, you can put a socket onto the nut, 19mm, and loosen it some so that when you get the strut out of the car, all you have to do is hold teh shaft by hand and you can then take the nut off the rest of the way after you compress the spring.

to put it back together, use something to hold the strut shaft and use an offset 19mm box wrench on it.

then once its in teh car, you can torque it down.
