Hey there everyone... for those of you who have been waiting expectantly to hear about my car/see pictures... a full report will be done soon...:p

In other matters, the 2006 focus ZX5 SES is my first new car, and I know that gas mileage on new cars is bad... but just how terrible is it supposed to be? It seems like I'm filling up every two days. How long should I give the car ( ie: mileage)before I start seeing better feul efficiency??
I've been making sure to drive it a variety of speeds and rpms, and I've kept my fingers away from the cruise option, but are there any other pointers for breaking it in?? :)
Thanks

What should I expect for gas mileage??
Aren't you Canadian (and therefore metric)?

16 - 18 MPG city unless you're driving like the elderly. :p

I'm not sure about the MPG conversion, but in *Candian* terms, my first two tanks gave me just under 400 km on a 50L tank of mixed driving. I'm used to driving a Tercel that could go 2 weeks on a tank of gas... literally, so this is a bit different for me:eek:.
I don't have snow tires on the car, so that can't be affecting the mileage :D

Yep she's Canadian, I'd recognize that screen name anywhere ;) Z63R is about on the nose with his suggestions, of course your mileage will increase once you break away from city driving too

And I'm shocked no one so far in this thread has suggested that we need a picture of the driver to better determine gas mileage ;)

Apparently you missed the last thread my brother posted... he was ready to roast anyone who "leg-humped" me... so no pics !!:D

OK, 400km on 50L of gas is 8km /L. Based on my car that is what you should expect. I normally get between 7.8 and 8.5km/L around town. When you get it broke in and get out on the highway with the cruise control on you can expect to get 13 to 14.5km/L. I usually get 14km/L on the highway with the cruise set at 120km/hr.

Yes, I did have to use a calculator to make all the conversions:)

You need to do the math properly Christine. Don't do it like Paul. Days/gallon isn't very scientific. Canada measures milage in L/100km typically. So, sounds like you're getting almost 8L/100km. That's actually really good, and way better than I ever got in mixed driving. To convert to miles per AMERICAN gallon, you devide your L/100km INTO 236. 236/8=29.5mpg. And that works both ways. mpg devided into 236 gives you L/100km. Cool eh?

Don't listen to Dad's talk about mpg, cause he's using imperial gallons, which don't exist anymore so he's always 20% high.

The best I've EVERY managed, was 32mpg in one of my hatchbacks, and that was stopping at a truck stop, filling up, getting on the highway and cruising at 120km/h for 500km. And that was with a really loosened up engine, about 50,000km.

So, you're doing really well it sounds like.

Now, I did say the Fit would give you better milage. I think they're good for 40-45mpg. I wouldn't expect your Focus to get much over 35 in mixed driving, maybe high 30's on pure highway.

On mine, I was getting like 22mpg for the first 1000km, then it went up to around 26 for 10,000km, then up to 28 at 50,000.

For reference, my WRX gets about 24 in the winter, and 26 in the summer. Mind you, for some strange reason it gets the same milage whether cruising at 120, or 160. Doesn't seem to matter. But don't ask me how I know. ;)

Legacy? Errr... yeah. You could say that. Check my post count. ;)

Luckily, most of the controversial stuff has been lost to various forum moves.

Well a longer vehicle will get better mpg than a short one, so i'm guessing once you get going at the same speed, even though heavier, the 5 door will get 1-2 more mpg with a steady driver. Good luck

Umm... same reason we all do here... We're 500 miles away. The forum wouldn't exist if we all just went to IM.

Hey Chris I actually started it a few days ago, now I'm glad to see that the ball has begun rolling :)
