We took the FocusSport turbo cars to the track for the second part of the FOTB 2006 show at The Streets of Willow raceway in Rosamond, CA. It was between 105 and 111 degrees during the day while we were there. In our trailer it reached 117.

ZERO problems at the track for us. We had the 2.3 litre FS Project ZX3 and the 2.0 litre H&R ZX3 - both intercooled. Actually, the FS car's coolant got a little hotter than I would have liked and the clutch on the H&R car started slipping since it's currently stock. Paul Haskew's ZX4 ST was also on the track without any problems, but his clutch was also slipping at full boost with his FocusSport stage 2 intercooled kit.

The shakedown:

The FS car was detuned to 285 WHP from 350 WHP for maximum grip. We ran straight 91 octane for the first 2 sessions without any issue, but added a few gallons of 100 octane since we had access to it. We took out the back seat, but left everything else in the car including the spare tire. This car has a fully built, low compression engine. We pulled the quickest RAW time of the day @ 1.31.242 with Raffi driving.

The H&R car was detuned to 190 WHP to keep the clutch from slipping all the time. This car has a completely stock engine and is totally gutted with a cage. We ran straight 91 octane all day without any issues. The street tires and stock clutch really held this car back, though.

Paul Haskew's car was detuned to 197 WHP to keep the stock clutch from slipping all the time. This car ran straight 91 octane for the first couple of sessions without any issues and then added some 100 octane. The engine is completely stock. This car had full interior, also.

When I say "detuned" I mean we turned down the boost, nothing more. These are the same ECU programs that we run on the street on 91 octane. The reason we went to this event aside from it being part of FOTB is to prove how well the FocusSport turbo kits perform on the track in 105 degree + weather. The FS and H&R cars were out on the track more than most cars there since we had access to all run groups - they didn't get "babied" around either. I think we've made it apparent that these kits are beyond safe in the heat. We're very pleased with the results. :)

Impressive! You could have brought the cars here and tested at Firebird Raceway. Was 118 degrees three days ago, only 114 today. The hottest weekend ever in Phoenix, if I'm not mistaken.

I think 111 degrees was enough to make a point. Also, this was part of FOTB 2006 - not something I would want to miss. :)

Phhh, come out here and try that in 90% humidity. ;)

Looked good out there.
The humidity would make it perform better when the car is moving. Hot dry air is the worst becasue the convection is not as efficient.... Good luck

'Twas a joke.

yup, its the right car :) don't she look beautiful!!! Wife was in the car too...

The humidity might be just fine for the engine & boost, but 118* @ 90% humidity would give the driver heat stroke just walking out to the car! On the other hand... I don't care what ANYone says... >100* is HOT no matter what the humidity is!!!

^^^ At the end of one session I stopped Paul as he was driving thru the pits to see how the car was doing and his wife was looking like she was about to be sick from the heat. It was pretty bad out there. However, that is EXACTLY what we wanted - as close to the worst driving conditions as we could get.

Randy, Vik and Raffi did in fact BEAT HARD on these cars, and I think everyone there could see that was evident.

I'm glad that they could get some testing under the belt for the Focaljet Track Attack 2 comin up a week from Saturday.... it'd be a shame to have everyone bow out due to failure.

Looks like they'll be nice and strong to contend with in the August heat!

Not to get too off topic here, but why do they put blue tape over the headlights on that silver ST? I've seen a number of cars do that for track days. What's the purpose of that?

to prevent rock chips from hitting the light and shattering them... used to be that it was required to if they break, most of the glass would stay in place and not fall over the track.

not really a major concern with plastic light housings, but could help avoid breakage.

If you have lenses that will shatter, the tape keeps it off the track in the event that a rock or something else hits them. And also even if you don't have glass lenses, the tape will protect whatever you cover to some extent.
