can someone tell me how hard it is to change the fuel filter? i havent done it since i bought the car in 02...and have a feeling that it needs to be done asap...

thanks

L

It is very easy.... it is retained with a single fastener on the underside of the car between the fuel tank and the body... toward the forward side of the tank. It uses two intuitive quick-release fasteners than can be accessed relatively easily.

My only caution is to pay attention to fuel safety. If the car has been running recently, the fuel system will be pressurized. Regardless of fuel pressure, some fuel spillage is certain, so watch your sparks and open flames, etc.

I don't have a step-by-step handy, but I'll say for sure that it was an easy task.

I have a feeling that your filter can stay on for much longer without any adverse effects. ;)

I wouldn't bet on it....

I just changed mine with 23K on the car.... I was amazed at how restricted the flow was through it.

I'm just now doing mine and I have 45K on it... lol I hope it fixes the idle problem I've had.

Pull the number 12 fuse (fuel pump), start the motor and let it go untill it dies. This will depressurize the system. The the lines have clip fasteners and the filter is mounted with a single screw. Then the mount is tightened to the filter with another screw. Just did mine and my mom's car a few minutes ago, not hard to do.

passenger side right in front of the gas tank. just get under the car, take a look in front of the gas tank, and its right there. BE ADVISED: be very careful with the clips, mine broke. I had to go buy new ones from Ford, they were too big, so I had to dremel them down a bit to get them to go in the holes, and they finally clipped in. This was today, so tomorrow Im going ot the dealership to have them check it out and make sure it's all clipped in right. Good luck!

Make sure you have the car as far up in the air as possible, whether it be on jack stands or on a lift. You have to have your arms at 90 degree bends to get to the filter because it's in a bastard of a location. I had to do mine with the car jacked up just enough that I could only lay underneath it...and it sucked.

Hint : Peek inside the box of the new fuel filter so you know what to look for under the car ;)
You can use the universal prying device (a screwdriver) to undo the clip, just be careful not to punch a hole in the fuel filter, gas tank, or the fuel lines. And since you're working with gasoline, remember eye protection!
