Good point. When I moved from California to New Jersey, my son and I both got sick (fevers). We called tri-care and got an authorization to be seen in the next city we were going to be in. It was easier for the family member than it was for me the military member, but that's another stoory altogether (and partl my own fault).
However, the wives in California all HATED Tricare because the only approved OB/Gyn they could use was an hour away and it was a scary clinic. In that particular case we suffered from being away from a large military community, reducing the number of options.
As I said before, it's not the best coverage out there, but it does offer advantages at times.
Oh yeah... you're going to go through the same question for dental coverage too because it is a separate policy. In that case, you do pay a monthly premium. We've gotten good use out of it.
