I just got married last month and my command is telling me I have to put my wife on Tri-care even though she is a civil servent for the city of Jacksonville and has a better health care plan than Tri-care.
So do I really have to put her on or can I just ignore what they are telling me?

Your new wife is not going to have to drop her insurance but in most cases tricare can get money from the other insurance comapnie to benifite everyone at the local base clinic like getting new machines.

Do it. It costs nothing. The coverage will last as long as you last in the service. It's not the best coverage out there, so she may very well want to use what she has from her job.

More is better.

If she has an ID card she is on Tricare Standard at no cost to you unless she needs to see a doctor or something. Talk to your local Tricare person on base, they are very helpful.

OK... heres what you should do. Sign her up for your tri-care, first off... its accepted nationwide. Second, she can chose which ever she wants to have billed. One may be primary and the other secondary. Something else to consider, you may also be able to be "double billed" which means if she choses yours as primary may then the secondary insurance may pick up the copay.

Good point. When I moved from California to New Jersey, my son and I both got sick (fevers). We called tri-care and got an authorization to be seen in the next city we were going to be in. It was easier for the family member than it was for me the military member, but that's another stoory altogether (and partl my own fault).

However, the wives in California all HATED Tricare because the only approved OB/Gyn they could use was an hour away and it was a scary clinic. In that particular case we suffered from being away from a large military community, reducing the number of options.

As I said before, it's not the best coverage out there, but it does offer advantages at times.

Oh yeah... you're going to go through the same question for dental coverage too because it is a separate policy. In that case, you do pay a monthly premium. We've gotten good use out of it.

does she pay for insurance where she is now...tricare is free..and as previously said..its your benefit......but as for the question of do you HAVE TO...the answer is no. all that your required to do is enroll her in DEERS...thats it...if you dont enroll her in tricare PRIME (tricare standard she has automatically by gettin hitched to you) you wont get in any trouble...just when they ask...say she is in deers..and has tricare standard...that will shut them up...
