Well, I was getting some oil for an oil change and looked up and there it was.... SLICK 50!

I know, I know.... they quote "are a waste of money" unquote. The thing is, I've used Slick 50 in every vehicle I've owned since 1993 and it's worked for me. So I bought some @ $15 a quart and put in synthetic with it and a Pure one filter. We'll see what happens. :thumbup:eek:r :thumbdown

My '93 Explorer had 145lbs of compression when I sold it in '01 with a 140k on it. I've had no engine failures and consistantly get high gas mileage.

What are you guys doing to boost mileage????

Right now I'm getting about 33mpg 50/50 city/highway. I've got the 104's in and a fresh fuel filter and I'm waiting on a Marcy CAI & BSD I've ordered. I really like what I'm hearing about the header picking up some mileage. Next up is fill the tranny/final with some synthetic.

With gas at $3 gallon, I'll be trying some more stuff too......

I work at a national auto parts chain, and I cringe when I see people buying this crap.

if memory serves, the federal aviation commision jumped on the slick 50 bandwagon when it came out, however the teflon in the stuff cloged up oil filters and lines, planes started falling out of the sky and was given the heave ho real quick, just use mobile 1 or another good synthetic and dont worry about adding any additives. i have used mobile 1 5w-30 since the first oilchange back in 2k1, change it about once a year and never had any problems.

^^^ whattt... changed it only once a year... mmm ok..

i think i changed it twice last year, i use a mobile 1 filter, i dont loose sleep changing this stuff 20k-25k or so. i hope you guys arent changing it every 3k, your just waisting good oil. i know it might be difficult but try to let it go 10k. now if your car is a dedicated race car, blown or sprayed, ya cange it more often, like after every race. keep in mind that long service intervals are dependant on proper operation of the vehicle. you can run dino oil 10k, you know some of you do it...dont lie, you forget to change your oil or you just let it slide till you get paid, i wouldnt go that long on conventional oil and a fram filter, because i wouldnt buy convenitonal oil and a fram filter. ive got 95k on my car and still not burning any oil.

um, do you ever send out your oil to be analized? Very few oils are designed to last that long (I think amsoil and mobl1 EP off the top of my head)

no. if you were to run mobile 1 on a dyno for 100k the oil might loose 3%-5% of its lubricating properties worst case. it dosent break down. a computer controled car keeps fuel metering in check, so gas in the oil is minamal, carbon that may built up is broken down, and caught by the filter, in an already clean engine with proper sealing no outside contamination is present, the h20 thats produced from combustion is again caught by the filter. the stuff sticks real well to internal parts, so really no build up can accumulate (nor much metal to metal contact), i have an oil pressure gauge so if by some freak accident the filter actually began to clog i would notice a pressure variance, come to think of it, if the filter got that cloged i would have another serious issue.

id be way more concerned about the slick 50 causing problems
kbetts change your oil and never put slick 50 or any other such type stuff in again

lol...thats cute id hate to think that media and advertising get the best of you guys, research on your own, and make your own decisions.

think about this, "if you expirence stop and go driving...bla bla bla... change your oil every 3k miles". you ever tried to do any stop and stop driving? your oil will last for fu&^%n ever. every one expirences stop and go driving, if you go you have to stop. tell me the last time you just goed and goed, until you ran out of gas, then your stoped. even if you didnt stop, whatever ran into you or whatever you ran into... stoped you. i dont like to jump on the conspiracy bandwagon, but uninformed minds are eaisly manipulated. gas and oil are no different than crack and smack, its necessary for the lifestyles we enjoy, so we just have to get more of it. it is crazy, but its also true.

Dude...you just blew my mind.

I need to come into Duratec Tuning more often.

its all about heat cycles, if you drive your car for more than 20 miles at a time then congrats you're doing the engine justice. For most of us who have a focus its a highway machine (or so it seems) and the hotter it gets the better....any breakin routine is bull SH%% you get it hot and let it sit...get it hot and let it sit that allows rings to set it in and provides a good range of RPM for your motor to work with through its lifetime. thats why you always see caddies drivin by grannies burning oil. not willing or able to take the car to its limits. or short 2 mile drives to the grocery store and back....point is regular oil changes with regular oil and the engine will last longer than the rest of the drivetrain while you own the vehicle!

I dunno, I just change my oil and filter (both Mobil 1) every 7500-8000 miles.

I'm sure it will go 10k no problem, but the car is my work vehicle too, and the motor is cranked and killed upwards of 30 times three-four days a week.

3k oil changes are stupid. I dunno about 20k, which is why I won't comment on Machine0316, other than saying that he has a point about advertising getting the best of most people. A good one.

I just say do what works. If your car goes fine on consistent 20-25k mile oil changes, then use the extra $$$ on food and beer, and enjoy life.

If you wanna buy full synthetic and change it every 3k miles, that works too...

As far as using Slick 50, if you feel it works, and the OP apparently does, with his Explorer still getting good compression, why not?? It definitely won't kill your motor...

:dunno:

i would like to see the oil analysis on the 25k basic mobil 1....

amsoil and mobile 1 ep i could understand... but come on...

i change mine out at 5k... i only run mobil 1 and mobil filters... but if you read the Mobil 1's suggestion... they suggest replacing the filter every 5k miles even w/ the extended performance filter and oil... and that is straight from the company who makes the stuff... also keep in mind.. dealers such as ford and gm do use mobil 1... for instance... the corvette comes off the line w/ mobile 1 in teh pan... and its routine maintance is still either 3k or 5k tops...

anyways... i'm not denying mobil 1 is good stuff... its all i use now days... but i would still like to see the test... so drain off a half pint or so and send it out... very curious to see what the test shows.... hell... could be wasting money that i dont have a lot of... but then again... on my car... at 3k... the oil is already brown... at 5k... its a brownish/black...

does the oil come out kinda thick when you drain it off at 25k... or just as easy as when you put it in? do you have a manual oil pressure gauge? curious to see what kind of idle oil pressure ur getting w/ that much mileage on the oil aswell...

-AcId-

almost forgot....

i know of several people who use slick 50... a few dirt track guys... and a friend of mine....

now... i dont know if this is because of the slick 50 or not... but....

he used to have an old 84 chrysler pos... that he would run a bottle of that stuff every oil change... well... on his way home from work... he hit a dip in the road (large pothole) which had something in it that came up and put a nice hole in the pan... he drove the car another 20 minutes with no oil in the pan before he got to his house (he hadnt realized what had happend) after all was said and done... before they put a new pan on it (this car already had over 100k on it...) they pulled a few rod and main bearings just to make sure... and they looked damn near new... not even down the the friggen copper wear surface... no groving... no scaring... no heat damage... perfectly smooth... it was crazy.. i figured they'd be toast... now i dont know if its because of that stuff... and i personally dont run the stuff... but thats just one of a few stories i have about the slick 50 stuff...
