my girlfriend's Mazda3 will be arriving from another dealer on wednesday. i think after the drive it'll have like 120 miles plus whatever was on it before they drove it to our dealer. should i wait a while for it's first oil change, and when i change it can i switch to Mobil1 right away?
how soon can you switch to synthetic oil on a brand new car?

No sooner than 1000 miles. The reason for this is the engine needs to wear in and synthetic oil is so slick, it would take alot longer for the rings to seat in and the bearings to form up. you'll notice that the original oil is not only traditional but also a greenish color. Thats because it contains additives to aid int he break in process. So let that oil run its course and change to synthetic at your first regular oil change. 
ok on a side note...i got a brand new car and the first two intervals at 5k and 10k are free... including oil change tire rotation and other checks and balances... so my question is...do i wait to switch to synthetic after these two? i doubt that they are pouring in synthetic and i dont want to buy synthetic for them to pour in...
so i guess the question is: is it bad to go synthetic at 1000 and then go conventional till 10k

Just bring your own oil for the oil change.
We did dino oil at 1500k in the CosWagon, then switched to Mobil 1 at 3k.

I would wait til the third oil change to make the switch, probably around 10K would be good, if you go by the reccomended manufacturer oil change interval of 5K in the Focus owner's manual.CINCIN said:

Here we go with this topic again. You can put it in right away but you might as well get some use out of the factory installed oil. It isn't too "slippery" and things don't have to "break in". Just switch it when you do you first oil change, whenever that is. If it is too slippery and engines wouldn't break in with it, how would you explain so many new cars coming with synthetics from the factory now?

No I dxed it in from another dealership and switched it over to synthetic the day we brought it in. Was the first thing that happened.
My buddy who just bought a brand new bmw went to get the oil changed after 1500 miles, and they were like "no." He said "No I know I'm willing to pay for it" and they were like "no not because we don't want to... no because the first oil has additives in it for the break in period. We want you to run that for the first full interval, then you'll go to the normal synthetic."eurozx3 said:

well part of the problem, and I'm suprised you haven't run into this is that Synthetics can clean up the sludge that builds up in an engine and well you can get leaks like that. Synthetics don't build up sludge as much or at all like normal oil does, thus the sooner you switch, the less sludge you have to worry about.uujjj said:
Also keep in mind that you dont need to be changing your oil every 3K miles...change it at the recommended mileage by the manufacture and you should be fine. I know several automotive fleets where they do oil sampling testing so they aren't spending huge amounts of money on oil changes and change the oil out if they have a problem and retest.
Oil change intervals should not be based on any random person's suggestion. There are a few people that absolutely NEED to change their oil at 3k or sooner. Blanket statements aren't necessarily a good thing mmmmkay.SilverSVT said:
