Lotso Ford power at Portland Lotus HPDE (many pictures)...video added!

Edit: Uploaded three videos to YouTube:

* Chasing Down a Nogaro Audi S4
* Shadowing one of the Cortinas
* Chased down by the Plymouth Valiant

Not my fastest laps, but more interesting for the traffic.

Last track day of the year for me was *hot* in the Portland paddock (paid for not bringing the EZup). Lotus club track day went well, but was cut short when someone laid down oil in T10 (or thereabouts) and at least one car found it. Race group was pulled off the course. I think they were going to continue (it was only 3 p.m.), but figured I would just pack it up for the 3-hour drive home. No worries, I got some good laps in. This is my last visit to Portland before they repave and alter the course over the winter.

Anyway, there were lots of Ford-powered cars at this track day. Here are some paddock pics. I'll post a couple of video clips of the fun later to Focustein's blog and for the local guys.

Not Fords, but Still Some Nice Sheetmetal (and Fiberglass)

Club Lotus (and Alfa) events are fun because the organizers are a little more relaxed (but safety conscious). There was a race group and lots of great bodies yesterday. A vintage race event is running at Portland this weekend and today is the "All British Field Day" so there were many cool cars on trailers and such parked around the exterior paddock.

Some more (non-Ford) vehicles from the track day/vintage test and tune:

I *think* this was the fastest car out there yesterday, but I was not timing. It sounded and looked fast going down the straight, that's for sure. And you know that is going to handle.

Image

This was my favorite car from the event, as it was fast and the driver could really make it handle. He blew right by my car and an Elise that I was playing with all morning.

Next year I promise to have a decent DSLR so I can catch some action pictures.

There's not one vehicle posted here that I wouldn't want to become physically intimate with ('cept mayhow the Valiant). Those cars arouse my amorous propensities...

Thanks for those. :thumbup:

Actually, in my case, it's "giraffic". :D

I want to slip myself inside all of those machines, strap down real tight and have my way with them. They're all very appealing. Except, again, the Valiant (though I'm sure it's a beast) and the Europas. Never really cared for the Europas as I do almost all other Loti.

I had to love the Plymouth cuz it was FAST and could stick in the corners. The owner said the only real suspension mod was a beefy rear sway bar, but I'm sure the stock springs, bushings, etc., and such were at least replaced after all these years. Engine was a small-block V-8. My 1974 Valiant had 318, but I'm not sure what this was (he said, but I was not paying attention):

I will include a video clip of the thing with the clips I assemble later.

Heh. I had that cold-air setup on my '63 Fairlane... :thumbup: (See the October 1998 issue of Car Craft magazine)

Less love for The Val 'cause it's so stodgy compared to every thing else pic'd. :)~

Hey man! That's my buddy's 2007 JCW Mini Cooper S! Heh. Looks better with the hood down. It's got an intercooled turbo, tiny though it might seem. Even stock, he did a good job of keeping up with me in the twisties (him with new RT-615s and me with year old ones after 6 events). I pulled on him slightly in the straights and held that gap through the turns.

mk1 are great/ forget a miata motor. most are throwing cossie escort motors in them. damn! lol (but dime are kewl to)

and a side note.
all sunbeam tigers will be v8 powered. that is what a sunbeam tiger is.
if not it is just a sunbeam. (both owned by people in my family in this house (i still have a sunbeam tiger and sunbeam manuals here)

great pics. nice cortinas (lotus power and handling)

looked like fun.

i take that back, without the v8 its an alpine. now i foget. but with a v8 its a tiger. lol

Lots of awesome cars you got there. Looks like it was a lot of fun.
It was fun. For club HPDEs, I'm definitely preferring the Club Lotus NW events now (of the club-based Portland lapping days):

* No novice groups
* Smaller run groups
* Less anal driving rules (but diligent attention to safety)
* Efficient run group management
* Interesting cars
* Nice organizers
* Flexible pre-registration payment rules (nice for the rainy NW)
* NO CONES!

Eh, I know the R56 will eventually have more tuning potential (IE WHP) but I'd still rather have my R53.
