Hello all,

I hate to seem like the slow child in class, but I replaced two of the wiring harnesses in the engine bay of my 2002 ZX3, and I have ONE connector that for the life of me I can't remember where it goes.

I'm at work now, so no pic, but if we can't figure it out I'll post a pic tomorrow.

The main engine wiring harness comes from the ECM through the firewall, across the back of the firewall where it carries most of the engine sensor connectors. This harness then plugs into another harness that has the vehicle speed sensor on the back of the MTX-75, then further along it splits four ways with one two-pin connector going into the top of the trans straight down (clutch position sensor?)

At this point on the harness (under the battery tray) is a square connector with a wire retainer that looks identical to the cam position sensor plug. Where does this go? I've found where every other plug goes but this one, and can find nothing in it's range of motion to plug it into.

Past this connector is where the O2 sensors plug in, and the harness runs across the fans.

If anyone can ID this for me and give me a clue, I'd appreciate it!

No, it doesn't reach that far across the engine, and I've got that one hooked up.

This one looks just like the connector that is on the right rear of the cylinder head as you face the car, just lower than the valve cover (cam position sensor.) It has the silver wire retainer like the injector harness does.

Thanks anyways, Denny

Anyone else? Bueller? Bueller?

crank postion sensor maybe? i would really need to see a pic. the CPS is on the front of the block right next to the trans.

how low will the wire go?

I'll check both of those tomorrow (I'm a fireman, and I'm at work till 7am.)

I've got one sensor on the trans below the starter and one on top that goes straight down, and both of those are plugged in. Is there a third one I'm not seeing?

I looked at the blown up motor, and I don't see any plugs on the block that I'm missing. I appreciate the input!

just to verify, this is connector is on the front of the engine on the drivers side, correct? or is this connector on the back of the engine/trans. im guessing front cuz you said something about the battery box

The connector comes from the same section of wiring harness that has the two trans connectors described above, then goes to the O2 sensors and the power steering pump farther down the line. It ties in at the same place as the trans connector the goes straight down under the right side motor/trans mount. Does that help?

The other trans connector I've found already is on the back/firewall side of the motor. I'm having an "Aha!" moment here, isn't there another plug on the trans on the front side of the motor too? That would make sense, reading the flywheel for crank position...

Denny, the fog is clearing...

yes the crank postion sensor is on the front about mid way down on the front side of the engine as i said before.

its on the block just about the windage tray/skirt. hope that helps

That has to be it. I'll check it when I get home.

Thanks so much! FJ is such a great resource, it really helps knowing I can tap the knowledge of others when I'm stumped.

yeah thats really the only connector on the front of the engine that would be in that area and would have that kind of connector.

btw just ran out and looked at the spare block in the garage and the crank pos sensor has the same connector as the cam pos sensor. so i think we found it

That was it! Mystery solved!

Thanks so much, that one had me scratching my head. I should be firing up the used replacement motor on my PWSC ZX3 today, keep your fingers crossed.

Well, it would have fired up except I made a mistake. A big one.

While hooking up the Crankshaft Position Sensor, I noticed that the one on my replacement motor faced 90 degrees away from how the one in my old motor was positioned.

I then went back and re-read the eBay auction that I bought the motor from. While it was from an 02 Focus like mine, it was from a car with an Automatic. When I bid on it I remember seeing that, and searched to see if there was anything different about the motor from an AT car, and found nothing.

Well guess what, the CPS is different! It mounts to a round metal disk, which is then bolted to the block FROM THE BACK! This means to change it, you have to drop the tranny and the clutch and flywheel. Steve from Tousley confirmed that both the sensor and the mounting disk are different, and that I'm not the first guy to make this mistake.

This sucks. I just got the whole thing back together, and now I have to tear it apart again.

Denny, more work ahead of him.

No, I have the one from my blown up motor. I just wish I had thought to change them when the motor was hanging from my engine hoist before I put the tranny on it.
