Just wanted to give a quick public service announcement.

Though they have been live for a few weeks now, Tempe recently went live with a new photo radar program; cameras and speed vans. So watch your speeds, if you don't already. Two cameras are located on Rural, between 6th St and Rio Salado, one southbound and one northbound. Speed Vans can be placed anywhere.

speaking of

I got pulled over tonight on the 60 for 75+ in a 65, but I was doing WAY worse than that about 30 secs. ealier.

Cop was nice and let me off with a warning cus I was honest with him. I had just come from a friends bday dinner and didn't drink, but the cop breathalized me cus my eyes are bloodshot (could be the pneumonia) and i blew a 0.00000000000000000INFINITY and he thanked me for being honest.

Dang. Lucked out.

Talking about freeways... DPS will be introducing Speed Vans to the 51. Prescott Valley recently did the same.

I noticed that they have installed the sensors for freeway cameras on the 101 north all the way from the 202 to the guadalupe. the cameras are not up yet but I am sure they will be soon.

You sure? That would be Chandler right?

Hmm. Haven't heard anything about that. Strange. I'll have to ask about it. Wouldn't surprise me.

This state has really gone trigger happy with these damn things. Tucson is using them too now. I feel paranoid going anywhere. Enough with these cameras already please!

I see no point in fixed cameras for anything more than red light violations. the vans make a difference for speeding. only because they can move. when people see the cameras go up they only behave themselves in that one spot.

I know I do...but I don't like having to pay attention to the sides of the road to make sure my 10 over (at times) won't get me a ticket if I'm running late... I've seen the ones near ASU's parking areas go off every day... at least the first month is only a warning

Its only growing. Be glad you dont live in Texas or Illinois. They are going absolutely crazy with them.

As for Arizona, theres more cities in development. Star Valley and Peoria are two that I know of.

Warning period begins for Tempe photo radar

Most of Tempe's new photo radar equipment has been installed at five intersections as police began a 30-day warning period for red-light runners Thursday .

The new equipment means seven Tempe intersections are now monitoring red light runners and people speeding through green lights. Part of the upgrade includes three additional fixed cameras for speeding. When installation is complete, the department would have added 20 new cameras.

"They're finishing up installing them," said Mike Horn, Tempe police spokesperson. "There's one intersection that should be online by the first part of next week."

The city began using photo radar enforcement since 1996.

Police chose the new locations based on feedback from data on speeding and traffic engineering.

Tempe will continue using two photo radar vans, which have been issuing warnings since September. The vans will now issue citations.

"Basically we've been in the process of transitioning from the old outdated equipment to the new provider," Horn said. "While we're in that new transition. We've been issuing warnings and all the bugs are worked out of that."

Motorists caught violating traffic laws through the intersections will receive warnings by mail until Dec. 1.

There will be signage near the new intersections warning motorists about the new photo radar. The location of the vans will be on the Tempe police website each week.

Police hope the new radar will help reduce traffic accidents in Tempe, which had more than 7,000 collisions last year.

And the new equipment is not a money-making machine for the city, despite some residents' belief, Horn said.

Tempe lost $285,000 last year through its radar enforcement program.

Officials expect the new program to break even.

Ya I live in Prescott and Prescott Valley has speed vans and two redlight/speed cameras and there is also a new one on the 69 going into PV from the 17. Just to let you guys know if you ever come up here.

Ya it all is starting to suck because their setting those things up everywhere. My dad got a ticket by one in PV and my brother got a ticket in scottsdale.

And we have the power right here to keep each other informed. So far so good in this thread, however we need to know what these bleeding vans look like. Plain jane white vans or what? Cameras are so obvious you have to be about a light year away not to notice, but the mobile thing is a bit scarier.

They're speed cameras, and not photo radar right? Calling it photo radar is a bit of a misnomer I believe.....I've never even heard a beep from my state of the art V1, I'm pretty sure they go by sensors in the road surface. The vans however, I have no idea what they are all about. Could be radar as I haven't encountered one of those yet....

The ones in Tempe are the new Chevy Uplanders, white on the right side of the road.

just like that. two prime spots they've been located are just west of Dorsey on southern in the school zone and just north of southern on rural, north bound.

i've also seen them on mill just south of broadway, southbound side.
