...they're stronger. not eagle, crower, JE strong, etc...but a lot stronger.
 
SVT rods and pistons can be a cheap alternative to forged internals. it has been proven to daily drive with 330 whp on stock svt rods and pistons. where at stock zetec fail around the 250whp range.

Omni, the svt bottom end is the same (as far as measurements go not talking strength) as the regular zetec.

all the compression comes from the heads.

the zetec = 48 cc combustion chambers

the SVT = 42 cc combustion chambers
 
how much cheaper are we talking, it seems to me it would be better to just hold off until you have the money and buy better ones....but thats just me....:dunno:
 
well sometimes you can get some used ones for 150~ so thats pretty cheap..

but i know from steve they are like 159 for the set(rods pistons and rings) x4 and your nearing the forged parts like JE, Crower, Supertech, Eagle territory so new, its not worth it but if you can get some used then sure
 
if building on the cheap... the svt rods/pistons are the way to go... you can pick up a set in the 20k mile range for 100-200... and have been dyno proven to hold 20+psi of boost... and some have been daily driven at those levels without a problem (350-370whp range)

now... if your planning a 300whp build... $150 is much better then a $1000..

as everyone else has stated... the compression is all in the cyl. head and gasket....

i believe the svt also runs a slightly thinner head gasket which also bumps compression up a bit along with the smaller combustion chamber.

on the contrary my sedan driving brother, the svt gasket is actually thicker then the regular zetec gasket.
 
the svt rods are a good cheap way to be safer at 250-300 hp ;)i have a set for sale 210 shipped has around 20k on them ;)

Only if you count the head gasket as part of the bottom end... as the SVT head gasket is thicker than the standard Zetec.

.035" vs .051" IIRC.
 
i knew it was one way or another... just couldnt quite remember.. i knew they were different though...

Don't mean to budge in here, but if you check Massive Speed System, stock Zetec is .027" and I think OrangeSVT03 said that the difference between reg Zetec and SVT is .025" so SVT hg is .052"...
