overheating ?

hey guys i have somewhat of a problem right now with my 2000 se.

Heres what its doing i was sitting at an intersection the other day and all of sudden it started to high idle and then choked and acted like it was gonna die and then went back to normal ran fine for a few mins and then started to high idle again then choked again then went back to normal again the second time around the multi function fail safe cooling light came on i just figured it was the thermostat so i replaced it but that didn't work so i'm wondering if the CHT sensor could cause this problem or is it something else? please help i really don't want to replace this motor if i don't have to

What did the temp reading say on the dash?

at first it stayed in the middle but it went to red when that fail safe cooling light came on

I dont think you will haft to replace the whole motor

But need some more info, does this happen all the time now? How much driving until this starts? New coolant?
