Considering the price difference of 87 to 91 out here in Phx is usually $.25/gal, this brings up the question....

How far can someone go on 87 octane as far as the Zetec is concerned?

I am looking to have a solidly performing car running on 87 octane and keeping my 33mpg that I currently enjoy.

Plan included the following.....FRPP head, long tube header, high flow cat, cat back, 65mm tb, cam gears, and possibly cams.

you can run basic boltons on 87 but once you start messing with cams and what not you will need a tune, and i believe (correct me if im wrong) focus sport is the only one to have an 87 tune

I am definately wanting to get a tune. I know coming from the Mustang side of the Ford camp, a tune is your best friend after you have some cash in your ride. If Focussport offers an 87 tune, thats outstanding.

I know Tom over on FF can send you the Xcal3 with a mail order tune for whatever you want basically. FocusSport is mass produced, if you want an idividual tune for exactly what you need, talk to Tom. I think he goes by TurboFocus01 or something similar

Tom is not on here, and FF/Tom have you mis informed. Randy(the FS tuner) will absolutely work with you on making the tune what you want. All you have to do is call and tell him what you want and don't want and as long as its safe for the tune he will do it for you.

Don't be too hasty about avoiding the higher octane tunes. You will get improved mileage along with the greater power of a higher octane tune. I pay less PER MILE using 93 octane (with my FS xcal2 tune) than I do when using 87 octane.

Wrong.

Randy at FS tailors every tune to every vehicle he sells.

Looks like its going to be Focussport tune for me. Its going to be a while, but I am chipping away at modifications for the Focus. I hope to keep 30mpg when its all said and done with my list of planned modifications.
