Its been absolutely freezing up here in the Northeast and I have noticed that the heat in my '00 focus doesnt seem to be kicking in as good as it should. I decided to replace the thermostat with a new one to see if it that would remedy the problem. well i ended up getting a 180 degree one because thats all they had in stock and i noticed that there was this black rubber seal around the endge tht the original motorcraft t-stat didn't have. i tried to install it but the damn seal wouldnt let the new t-stat seat itself correctly. i ended up removing it and at that point the t-stat seated perfectly.
so my questions are, was that black rubber seal supposed to be on there, even though it caused the t-stat to not be able to be installed correctly? and also, would running a 180 degree t-stat hurt my '00 focus lx? Thanks in advance

here is a link to a picture of the black rubber seal on the t-stat. the one i purchased is identical except that it was the 180 degree model made by Stant

i cant answer your question, but have one of my own for you!
00 lx, so you have the SPI engine? was it a pretty simple/straightforward replacement? my heat blows fine, but my motor doesnt heat up all the way

Yep, I have the SPI engine. I'd say it was a bit of a pain because of the location of the rear bolt on the housing being tucked behind the hoses. Trying to put a socket and ratchet in there to turn it loose was an exercise in patience. Other than that, it wasn't too bad. Just make sure you drain the coolant out first, otherwise it'll leak everywhere and smoke when you run the car. Obviously, I was lazy and this happened to me.

the thermostat gasket on the focus is just an o ring I believe. I dont think its the type that encapsulates the T-stat. IIRC, it sits on top of the thermostat in the housing.

the T-stat would only affect heating if it was open all the time, slowing the warm up process. If the problem continues, suspect a plugged heater core.

Nope, it is a split ring that installs wrapped around the OD of stat, if parts are correct it will slide in place and cover pinches the whole thing tight. Make sure if there is a small bleed hole in the plate it is pointed straight up.
