My sister has a 00' Mirage, that may be mine in the near future. The rear suspension needs to be replaced (shocks at least, springs IDK?) and she was quoted $500 at a mechanic. Were they trying to hose her because she's a female or is there something we're missing about why that would cost so much?

That's about right... I couldn't get the bolts off my rear LCA's, and had to take it to a dealer to get them off. Even with the supplied parts (shocks, springs, shims), they charged about $450.00 CAD. Hourly rate was somewhere around $125.00.

It looks like the rear shocks are around $80-$95 so that makes sense now. The strut assembly is cheaper, which is weird to me at least.

Dude...my wife had an 01 Mirage, and it is SO easy to do the rear shocks. 30 minutes and you could be done. Do it for her yourself. And springs don't generally go bad per se'. Especially on a car in AZ that is only 8-9 years old.

KYB GR2's are like $100 on ebay or you can get all 4 shocks and struts for about $230 Click Here

I'm bringing this back...The shop now says she needs both front and rear done (the fronts were done around 45K miles ago) and she was quoted $1000 this time.

If I do end up buying this, I've figured I might as well take this opportunity to install some lowering springs at the same time and do it all myself. But I have a couple of questions.

1. Would the KYB's and either H&R or Eibach springs be a good combo? I know installing lowering springs on stock dampers can prematurely wear out the dampers.

2. Both of them lower the car less than 1.5" would I need to get some kind of camber adjustment (bolt or plate) for that kind of drop?

The KYB GR2's are nothing more than a stock replacement shock/strut. I wouldn't run those with lowering springs unless you want to replace the struts again in a few months.

Plus...if your gf drives the car everyday...it would be better just to keep it as stock as possible. Once you start lowering it, and messing with stuff...that's opening a whole can of worms.....tire wear, alignments, hitting curbs with the bumper, scraping it on things....you don't want to deal with that.

Hey Justin, how did his sister become his girlfriend?

How much is really available for the Mirage in the way of lowering springs. Is it supported at all?

Also, if you are going to be taking this car on, and you want it lowered, now is the time to do it!

I haven't found any full suspension kits besides coilovers, and I'm not spending $800-$1200 on a new suspension on a car that would cost me $1500 to begin with. H&R and Eibachs are the only two brands I've seen as far as springs go.

If you want to have fun with a cheap old car, you have to shed the "I'm not spending X, because the car cost Y" mentality.

If I did that, I wouldn't have stuffed a $3k supercharger into a Focus worth $2500.

I don't know...that would be a question for him. :dunno:

I actually forgot what their relationship was...and I was too lazy to scroll back to the top to check...it had been like a month since the original post. So I didn't remember. :D My bad.

The bad part is that he didn't even correct me.

And DarkHorse...being that my wife owned one.....I know that the "fun factor" of a Mirage is like -20%.....you can only justify wasting money on a car if it has a +72% or higher "fun factor" rating.

Well said.

The investment won't give you monetary returns. The payoff will be the "smile factor" that we all know and love!

And from what I've seen in my wanderings, a Mirage + suspension + sticky tires, = HUGE smile factor.

I thought for a second maybe you just figured I had a girlfriend/fiance/wife and that she would be driving it as well. But apparently you just changed my relation to the current car owner...

I realize the fun factor of a Mirage sucks, my thought of doing this was because the suspension needs to be redone anyways and let's face it, all cars look better lowered.
