Pretty simple question -- I'm starting to lean towards replacing the stock air intake on my 04 SE Zetec with an SVT snorkel rather than a cool air intake. Anybody have any opinion either way? Doubtful, but has anyone dyno'd 'em side by side? :dunno:

Go with the svt airbox setup or iceman intake( on ebay) and you will be straight.

On a cool night, long ram and a short ram air intakes are going to give you a little extra oomph. Long ram air intakes are going to suck in cooler air due to it's location near the bottom front fender, but you have to worry about sucking in water from the road. Short ram air intakes are great on a cool day, but you have to worry about heat soak(basically sucking in the hot air produced by the cars engine), which can actually have a negative affect on performance. I own an SVT and love the stock setup. In my opinion, buy an SVT snorkel, go to www.focussport.com and buy a ITG pan air filter and call it a day.

I'm definitely thinking of going with the SVT airbox bottom and snorkel.... anyone selling one? :(

I'm gonna be selling my Iceman setup here pretty soon if you'd be interested in it :)

Oh? Good condition? I think I'd still rather go with the SVT, but if the price is right.... not that there should be any shortage of people looking to buy an iceman system.

just buy the snorkel and dremel out the bottom of your airbox to fit.

Take you stock snorkel tube, pull off the snorkel and mount it to your airbox where the resonator used to be.

On a cold night if you took that intake setup against otherwise identical cars with all other intakes, I guarantee you will see a bigger difference in driving ability than performance from the intake.

Mount the stock snorkel tube to the resonator protrusion, or the snorkel?

Check you PMs Lancer211

Remove the resonator,
Take the plastic off the stock tube and mount it where the resonator was clipped in.

If you want to be fancy, get an ABS 90 degree elbow and some high temp epoxy and glue it in there.

That is a bonus.

Though like I said. I would love to see a swarm of stock ZX3's with only the intake changed out dynoed and raced against each other.

I honestly don't think you'd see much of a difference unless it was a hot day, some of the SRI's wouldn't cut it.

Does a dyno really accurately measure air intakes against each other, given that the car isn't experiencing the same airflow it gets while underway?

I think you will like the SVT airbox and snorkel, especially if you use an Iceman TB tube. The Iceman tube is smooth inside and the same diameter as the MAF housing. I've been running that combo for over a year and it works great. Doesn't cost too much either, if you find fellow Jetters selling the parts.

Whatever you go with, make sure it keeps the stock MAF housing. I know most of the true cold-air intakes that put the filter near the fender change where the MAF goes. Our cars don't like this very much. I had an AEM cold air, which has a different MAF housing.... made my car run like total crap under 3,000 rpm, which is where I do most of my driving. I took that pile of garbage off and my car is running worlds better now.

Hmmm.... anybody have any advice about hot weather or high altitude I should know in regards to a new intake? It can get up to 120 degrees here ambient temperature in the summer, and Tucson's at 2600 feet of elevation.

"high altitude advice" besides forced induction. Not yet ready to spend that much. :D

(Still, worked pretty well for the P-51 Mustang)
