Hey,

So I need some big ass buckets.

1x 17.475
3x 17.505
3x 17.535
2x 17.625
1x 17.655
3x 17.715

Nobody seems to have these (or they are too lazy to check for me ).

Has anyone seen or made shims like the old contour zetecs? I have a machine shop i can use so if someone just tells me what they look like and what theyre made out of i can have at it.

I was thinking of using 304SS and make them to fit over the top of the valve just tall enough so they dont hit the retainer keepers. Are they hardened? because I cant do that properly.

Advice?

edit, upon searching they need to be hardened. around 60-65 rockwell C. :( does anyone have buckets that big???

While I don't have buckets that big cuz i think i looked for you...
...I had the same issue, so i called Massive and they got me some Ferrea valve 'caps'. They were all .0050" large. So what my machine shop did was put them on, measure the size of the bucket then, and then just machine the tip of the bucket down til it went down to the proper size.

They are called lash caps. They are pretty pricey for a piece literally 2mm tall by 4mm across...$5 each! But it may be your only chance.

If you're worried, Ferrea is one of the top brands in the world for auto components and internals!

I've been talking to Karl he's been trying to get a hold of his bucket box... says he should have those sizes for me.

But one of the valves i need a HUGE bucket thats not made so I may need one of those caps. Thanks!

New buckets are about 10 bucks at Tousley so I may go that route to save some dough. However some of my valves are over .005" out... so they wont work for all of them.

I'm sure you've thought of this already, but just in case, you may be able to swap some of them around (musical buckets) if some are on the plus side and some are on the minus side. I started out with 4 buckets out of spec and ended up having all of the tolerances within .001" of target. Takes a ton of patience, lol...

Good god, you must be running high lift NA stuff...My clearances are around/under .010" IIRC. :p

No, its just that I dont know the full history on these valves, and I wasnt the one that put it together in the first place (was still a n00b at the time). They are Supertech stock size, I got a great deal on them with a full set of Eibach springs, was told they had <20k miles on them. When I checked the lash the first time (over 2 years since the cams were put in by a shop that will remain unnamed) one of the valves was at .031 lash... most of the rest were between .023-.027... So I imagine they were never right ever since 2 years ago.

I think what happened was somewhere in the life of these valves someone decided to grind the valve stems instead of installing smaller buckets. So now one of them is too short even for the biggest bucket available.

The cams are your run-of-the-mill FR2's, one of the last 5 pairs Hillbish ever got a hold of, which I believe was part of FR's very last run of them... I was basically IBTL, lol

What scares me the most is that lash had to come from somewhere. Either they were just not lashed properly when installed (the shop has assured me this is not the case), or my cams wore down a full .010-.020 over the course of 2 years :(

edit, on second thought, theres no way the base circle can wear. So my money is on not installed correctly.

Your shop did them wrong. My shop did mine wrong. So i bought buckets, like 12 from Steve at tousley, and went to the junk yard and pulled 2 full sets of buckets for $20! Then I took all my lash caps off and made my own buckets to be within .001" of spec. I did Casey's too and his came out very well from what he said, I think lol.

I also believe I have at least 5, maybe more lash caps left over. I may have a full set of 16 laying around, I can check if you'd like

The junkyard here never seems to have any zetec cars. They also think its silly when I ask for 3+ different types of car lol (contour/cougar/escape/escort-zx2/focus)

But yeah I have been meaning to go the the jyard and grab a bunch of buckets.

Like I said the lash caps are too small for most of them but thanks for the offer I might take you up on that if I can get close with junkyard buckets.
