so, my car problems of late are compounding. on top of shot tie rod ends and a rear susp. bushing, and a clutch thats mostly dead i think my SC is dieing.

my gf, who drives my SVT w/JRSC, complained about a rattle from the car. when i could listen to it tonight, u can definatly hear a rattle, that varies with rpm. its sounds like is coming from the blower and it even feels like the vibrations are coming from the blower. it sounds pretty bad, almost crunchy.

one other point, it still makes boost when revved (in fact it was spiking slightly above what it normally gets at sustained WOT). i dont know if thats relevant, but its just another point of data.

So, can anyone shed some light on this? it is an easy diagnosis? is it toast? rebuildable? sell it for scrap? paperweight?

edit: A quick search of some youtube vids make alot of mention of the couple in the snout wearing out as the cause of the "rocks in the engine" noise, especially on the m90 blower. is this a common problem with the M62?

also, can i drive the car until i fix it? or keep it parked?

thanks, Norm

I have seen a youtube video on one of the boards where someone with a jrsc got that rattly sound. You can send the blower off to get repaired, but not sure how much that costs, but they do a damn nice job. I believe you can get the to port match TB inlet and such.

I've also heard good things about the rebuild options. I've seen the video of the guy replacing the coupler in the snout too; I havent heard of it being a huge issue in the M62; but from the couplers for sale on ebay it looks like they use the same coupler; so that could be worth looking at.

the snout coupler seems like such a big problem for the m90, but i think thats just because there are so many of them out there, they were OEM on all the supercharged pontiacs, jaguars, etc. wheras the m62 is realtively rarer out in the car world.

im gonna take the belt off today and test for play in the coupler, and inspect the oil seal in the snout. i might just get a rebuild kit and with the snout bearing/seal/coupler. and if that doesnt fix it, then the whole thing has to come off.

basically, if i have to take the SC off, its never going back on. i'd revert to NA.

It really isn't that big of a project to pull the blower off, I have done it twice now and can get the blower off the manifold in 30min easy.

You will need to do this even if you alternator fails and needs to be replaced. It's not that bad.

It's not that bad to get the blower itself off; release the belt, 4 bolts on the bottom, the bolt at the snout for the alt. support, the clamp for the bypass valve, and the throttle body. It would be much easier to put it back on the manifold repaired then it would be to revert to NA.

ya i forgot that i could separate the blower from the IM.

an update, took the belt off, and there is a lot of play in the pulley, so, i'm gonna order up the snout rebuild kit . the whole blower assembly turns easily and quietly by hand, so im optimistic that the damage is limited to the snout.

would love to see some pics of parts and repair, if you could. There are still a number of these kits out there that are going to be racking up miles.

So, my rebuild kit is currently sitting in Customs since monday, which is annoying, but I did get the blower removed.
It took me forever to figure out where the four bolts were to get the blower off. finally after seeing a pic of the IM online I realized that the bolts are long and go through the IM. I didnt install this SC so this is all new to me.
The other thing i figured out is that you need to remove the fuel rail/injectors. It looks like there is room for the blower to pass, but it always hangs up on something.
So, now i'll pull the snout off and wait for my kit.
Looking at the rotors, they look pretty good. theres small patches where the coating has worn away, but its not bad. There also some minor score marks on the edges of the rotor, but i chalk that up to pieces of grit that somehow got in and got pinched between rotor and housing. it doesnt look like anything is misaligned, and there is no scoring or rubbing on the ends of the rotors.

Is there a powdery glitter coating on the rotors? My rotors had a coating of snout oil from the leaky seal that also had "glitter" in it - bearing material. The rattle sounds I had were from the rear rotor bearings, not the coupler. Get those bearings replaced while you are in there.

good luck with the rebuild. Take pictures!

and when you go to put the blower back on; I suggest picking up a legnth of M8 X 1.25 threaded rod. Cut it to legnth and you can use it as studs to align the blower. thread 2 legnths into the blower a couple threads; put it on the manifold, Put in the other 2 bolts and then remove the studs by hand and put in the other 2 bolts. It will save a fair amount of time trying to re-align the whole thing.

thanks for the tip.

I havent got too far with the rebuild yet. I have the blower off and the snout all apart. I had to wait over a week for my rebuil kit to clear customs. now I'm waiting on a new pulley to show up in the mail (the old one was damaged due to a loose pulley bolt allowing it to wobble around)

So, maybe next week i'll get it all together. although my gf is starting to get annoyed about taking the bus to work (she daily drives this car)

twice i thought i had supercharger rattle, swapped it for another blower, started it up and had the same noise! both times it was the idler on the drivebelt had screwed up.

on the mondeo the top engine mount hides access to it.

in future i will check this before swapping out the blower.

now i have fitted a slightly smaller idler (my belt was a bit tight) so hopefully it wont happen again.
