a guy on FF did this, only issue he had was the speedo not working.
the tach worked though.

he used a zetec flywheel and clutch components
you would also have to swap out axles and possibly hubs but idk.

you'd need all the wiring from the front kick panels including dash up, the airbags including the wiring for the airbag control module and the module if you want those to work. you probably want to whole dash board including the harness if possible, as it's easier to swap the whole thing. The harness under the hood is totally different. You'd need an mtx clutch and flywheel kit for an mtx for a zetec and you'd need mtx axles. The knuckles are interchangeable but since you'll be going faster you should do the svt brakes as well, not slotted, cross drilled ebay performance special brake kit. Not sure about the spedo, but i still don't know why you'd not want the getrag? The close gears are money, autocrossers agree it's tough to get outta first but some 16" wheels with smaller tires will lower that first gear speed. it's not a hard swap it just takes a bit to get all the right pieces in place...

I auto-x regularly (solo) and I have been thinking about this swap for a while. Yes I know that I will shift more frequent but I also will be able to keep higher in the powerband. I loved my zx3 for auto-x. Now I have my SvtF and it feels awesome except the stupid first gear bog. Pulling out of a 180 leaves you yawning till you get going again. And as for traction, there's tires for that problem.. I'd rather be at least able to break forward traction if I wanted to. (Next problem would be sneaking it into G stock after the swap)

The MTX-75 is geared in such a way as to make the somewhat underwhelming Zetec output seem a bit more powerful than it is. First and second are short, to get you close to highway speed in a sprint, then third and fourth are there to putt putt around town in, and fifth, well, it's hard to call the MTX-75 fifth gear an overdrive gear (even though, technically, it is), since it still has you pushing 3K at 70 MPH. But the nice thing about that is it keeps your car reasonably torquey at highway speeds, so a bit of toe-in can still pull you past other cars and up mild to moderate grades without a downshift.

And the MTX-75 is nice for the "Boy Racer" in all of us that likes to spin the tires. My old Zetec, which had most of the NA mods short of cams and head, could spin all the way through first and second, then scratch them pretty hard in third. Not saying I condone that sort of behavior, but I know it could be done.

Wow you said it

Then again, I hear that the MTX-75 can handle more power than the Getrag. Not sure if this is true, but it's been floating around in these forums for a while.

I just hate that sixth gear on the Getrag keeps the SVTs in the same RPM range as the MTX-75 does with the Zetecs. You'd think that fifth might have the same overall output ratio as the MTX-75, with sixth being a super high cruising gear. Drop the RPMs to 2000 at 70, that would be nice. Am I the only one who wishes for a 7th forward gear on the Getrag?

I do wish the 6th speed was quite a bit more over driven than it is. 5th gear can take an SVT to speeds that are probably unachievable on any sort of normal road course track. Thus I don't think 6th needs to be so short. I routinely shift 1-2-4-6 in every day driving because the gears are just so close together. 22 mph per 1000 RPMs is just too short. I'd like to see 6th gear be somewhere around 30 mph per 1000 RPMs.

Agreed. If I could be between 2000-2500 at 70, I would be happy, and prolly see a 1-2 MPG gain on the highway. That would be nice. As for skip shifting, I do the same thing. My car almost never sees third or fifth, sometimes doesn't see 2nd, on the way to 4th, if I want to wind it a bit.

Hmmm.....wat about changing the gearing in a 6 speed??? I'm not a transmission expert so give me a break but don't 2 of the gears have like a 2.xx gear ratio and the other 4 like a 4.xx ratio? I don't know how that works exactly but couldn't u change either of those to make the first gear shorter?? Along with 2 a bit too?

You could also change out the final gear in the diff. But that would shorten all 6 gears. I wouldn't want to cruise on the highway at 70 with any shorter gears than I have now.

Changing gears is very very very expensive. Go to Quaife's website. It's $4500 for a gear set.

Wow....way to be dishonest.

I wonder if we could do a custom group buy of better 6th gears? The Quaife gear set only offers ~%10 RPM reduction in 6th gear, which isn't much for the money involved. I bet we could get 20-50 people if the price was decent.

How hard is it to get specific gears in a dual shaft trans like the Getrag? Would you need an entire new shaft or 2, or could you get away with just 6th gear?

Another thing, Foci have an overheat protection system that skips every second detonation in the cylinders. Could this be purposely activated at highway speeds through a tune so that it would save fuel, or would the engine just bog? Does this mode cause damage to the engine? Sorry for the lots of questions :p

T.Goat, that's actually not a bad idea. Sort of like the "variable displacement" motors that Dodge put in their trucks, that ran on 8 or 4 cylinders depending on throttle position and engine load.

I'm not sure if our motor makes enough torque to cut down the spark like that.
