I love that my phrase has been coined in this thread

Ted, I'd definitely sit down and take some serious test drives of these cars to make sure that this is what you want. They're definitely a lot of fun, but high-powered FWD cars definitely behave quite differently than a lightly modded ZX3

i really do want to stay domestic, but if i just cant find one, ill brand into a company ford has ties to.. im very wide shouldered and the more i think about it the more im thinking it was the way i sat in the seat, my back meaning, it just hugged to narrow for my build... ill still go check em though just to make sure. The caliber i felt soooo comfy in, everything just felt so right to me, that vividly sticks in my head

ive seen a good amount of ms3 vids plus i remember my friend heath's ms3 was a beast too in its own from what i could tell.. i think i just need to track down a CSRT4 and test drive it "with vigor" and get a good feel ;) , and test drive a 3(which is easy to do being i live 5 mins from a mazda dealer, the very mazda dealer i bought my focus from lol)

Ford sold their shares to Mazda but I would still take the speed3.

I think both cars will be very quick cars and have quite similar personalities when it comes to torque steer, etc so I would be looking into the overall quality/longevity of the cars in stock form as well as "modded" form (in case you decide that 260+ hp is not enough) and compare this to how long you think you will actually keep the car. If you take your findings into account as well as how well each car suits you then I am sure you will make the right decision for you.

Every Caliber I've seen come in at the shop I work at has had front end problems, tie rods. It seems to be a recurring issue with Chrysler products over the past few years. The factory outer tie rods are junk and wear out ridiculously fast. 300's, Chargers, and Magnums have the problem, as do Calibers on the car side. I've also seen it on Ram 1500's and a few Dakotas on the truck side.

One in particular was my boss' 2008 RAM 1500, tie rods had to be replaced under warranty at 18K miles. Took them over a month to get the parts. It was such an issue the parts were on backorder for that long.

Just my 2 cents on this.

whaaaat ... thanks for bringing this to my attention not just for me but my dad has an '04 ram 1500, he just rolled 45k miles on it and it went in for tranny work already once, but ill mention this to him as well.

While the MS 3 is nice, I have never been one for the styling. If I got behind the wheel, it probably wouldn't be a deal breaker. As to the Caliber, the SRT certainly is the most appealing aesthetics wise. I'd be tempted, but I'd pass. The styling is akin to the Aztec pen. Love it or hate it. I certainly would be concerned about buying any used turbo car.
Plus, the general quality and refinement issues.

My opinion...

I've heard about the tie rod ends issues on the LX platform cars. An issue brought to light, by the police use the cars started about 5-6 years ago. That and the brakes (too agressive a compound I think) The issue(s) have since been remedied.

This would be the first I have heard that the Caliber has the same tie-rod ends as an LX car:dunno:

Remember, in any of the cars discussed here....look them over closely, factory turbo'd cars are hit or miss in the used marcket. A ton of them were abused, ridin hard put away wet and just not kept up well...

So why are you looking at Italian cars?

Okay so Fiat only has a 35% stake right now, from what I saw it looks like they have the option to bump it up to 55% at some point.
If we are going there...wouldn't that car be German, it was developed under DaimlerChrysler.

No, I think you mean it is japanese, it rides on a lancer chassis and uses and evo motor. :p

One thing for sure, this car isn't 100% 'merican, just like nearly every car sold by the big 3.

Hmmm, Italian, German, Japanese.................The AXIS is back!!!!

I think the big difference is that Ford and GM are still American companies whereas Chrysler has been basically under foreign control for quite some time now.

I just picked up a copy of "Hot Rod Kulture" magazine and there were several ads for t-shirts with basically an American tilt to them and banners saying "Support Ford and GM".

No mention of Chrysler and this was in a hardcore old school hot rod publication, I have to say those t-shirts really struck a cord with me in realizing what a LOT of peoples percecption of Chrysler is.
