How is weight not a factor? 100lbs on a 30HP kart makes a huge power to weight difference. I'm not trying to argue, just understand.
I'm saying .5 seconds comes from something other than driver weight. 100 pounds is a factor...just not all of the factor. Like you said, the kid is a regular. Go as often as he does, and you'll probably find .4 seconds, if not more.

If I'm .3 seconds faster than somebody else, it may take me several laps (usually not more than 3, I'll back off for 1/2 lap) to get by. Those 3 laps are typically slower laps because I'm compromising the fast line to prepare a pass. If they are defending, the same holds true for that person. If that person in front gets blue flagged, we both may run a single slower lap, or if the drivers cooperate the pass can occur smoothly and not really cost either person much time at all.

I know karts don't have mirrors, but a good instructor told me: "If there is another car in your mirrors, he didn't get there by accident. He is faster. Let him by; try and learn something."

What kart track?
It was @ LeMans Karting in Fremont. My best lap was 18.030, the kid's best was 17.3 something.

While we're talking Karting, someone told me to lean forwards in the corners...that doesn't make sense. I felt like I should lean back-inside on the fast corners. Is there any place where you should lean forwards?
