Hello all, so a mechanic told me that because the rear o2 sensor i got does not come with the plug (it has to be spliced in) the computer will not turn off the check engine light and im guessing wont pass inspection. here are my questions.

1. does the rear 02 sensor have a plug like the front?
2. is what he is saying correct
3. does the front one have a plug? lol
4. is there a special tool required to remove the o2 sensors

thx guys

Your mechanic is an idiot. It does have a plug and the front and rear are color coded so you can't mix them up. They are easy to change so you can do it yourself for a LOT less than this jackass is charging. All you need is a part from auto-zone, do a search there are images of it on this forum and it only costs a couple bucks.

To reset the ECU just unhook the battery and reinstall it.

well he didnt mean that the rear usually has to be spliced, i bout the universal rear 02 sensor (it does not have a plug) from auto zone because it was half the price of the sensor that is SVT specific. the univesal said it worked with the svt but it was not SVT specific. so:

is it indeed universal or do i need to take it back to auto zone and get the SVT specific rear sensor

Sounds like he is talking about a ****ty cheap universal O2 sensor. The right one should be not much more than the universal, and much easier to install.

There are a couple specialized tools based on where it is (regular tools, but with slots for the wire), or you can just use a wrench, they are pretty huge though.

yeah i know im just at school living in a dorm and have no real access to tools, and yes they are the Bosch's, even the universal one, they wanted about 120 at auto zone for the rear, know where i can get it cheaper. one last question

what makes the universal one no good, aside from having no plug?

That's completely untrue - so long as you get a decent brand (like Bosch) and solder your connections and seal up the wiring where the solder connection is, you're all good. Universals are great when the application-specific harness is unavailable or the wiring was damaged from this or that.

NGK/NTK makes O2 sensors aswell and find them superior to the Bosch ones. I find the Bosch to tall and fat for the limited amount of space under there. Also the NGK look exactly like OEM Ford (they probaly make it for them who knows). So check if any of your local autoparts carry NGK and also mine costed 30 bucks for the pre-cat..should be the same price for post-cat.

Damn Steve, I didn't think your price on O2s would be that good, I know your prices are good, but WOW! Now I'll have to stop putting off figuring out which O2 has been giving me trouble. To the OP, I would clean up universal O2 and return it, and just go the O.E. route, thats a damn good price.
