None of the local Chevy dealers here in Austin, have a Sonic turbo on their lots, although doing a search on cars.com, I can see that dealers around the U.S. already have some on their lots.

The specs of the Sonic turbo are intriguing for the price range (with the exception of the drum brakes) and the initial journalist reviews say it's a very, very competive vehcile.

I was wondering about real world experience of the folks here. Have you had a chance to drive one? What are your impressions?

I would be using this as a commuter vehicle, but for the time being it would be my only vehicle and the only other car I'm seriously conisdering is the Fit Sport, mainly because of Honda build quality/reliability and the amazing capacity of such a small vehicle. (I've got a 100lb black lab to lug around).

Just wondering what folks who have actually driven it, think about it.

Thanks.

This is literally the first I have even heard of a Chevy Sonic, but I'll tell you this, if they wanted to be really cool, they would have called it a Chevy Sonique.

I have driven quite a few of these at work. They seem to be a pretty good car. I think I would actually take one over a Fiesta (I have driven hundreds of Fiesta's) if I was in the market for a car this size.

I could see GM selling a lot of these cars. Also it is kind of nice that even the base models get alloy wheels.

to me it was really slow til 2500... once it hit boost it was acceptable, looks damn cool though
Lol, sounds like my MS3, of course once it hits boost its like holy ****.

the sonic isn't like that.... it feels like a 1.8t jetta when it hits boost kind of. not impressive really, but i'm curious to see what real-world gas mileage will be. that could make or break this car, and i'm guessing with the 6 speed it should be decent

I got to take a spin in a mule, but I was kinda babying it because it was a mule. I honestly didn't get a chance to put it through it's paces like I wanted to so I can't give a solid opinion on it. The guy who tossed me the keys seemed to have a heavy foot and when he got on it it seemed like it did have some scoot though. :)

so if it has the same engine as the cruze is it fair to expect some tunes are already available? for those of you out on lots whats the sticker actually at KBB isn't giving much data on it yet.

a boosted aveo oh wait i mean sonic vs a juke which i'm going to assume is in the same ball park price range but offers AWD. and then there is the veloster which there is gossip around getting a tubro in 2013 (but isn't a 4 door).

EYE WANT A NEW CAR!

the sonic is a porker. 2800 lbs. it seems so wrong for a subcompact.

the mazda 2 in the same class is 500 lbs lighter at 2300 lbs.

ps as a reference, my 04 zx3 weighs 2575 lbs.
Maybe, but the Fiesta weighs 2500 lbs (does ford add lead bricks?), and the Sonic is faster AND gets better mileage than the 2 or the Fiesta.

I too at first thought it's too heavy for a subcompact. It is. But if you don't look at what it's labeled. Compact, subcompact, whatever, it SEEMS like a good car. They're building it in America, in Detroit I think. And that's an upside. It has the same options for drivetrain as a bigger, heavier car (cruze), and I like the looks of it. I do think it has Aveo'ish looks, but it's kind of like they took the Aveo and made it look a lot better. The Aveo is ugly to me. And awkward looking. This one doesn't look awkward. I have to admit, when I was in the market for a car 2 years ago, I really wanted to drive the Cruzes, because I'm kind of a GM guy at heart. But they weren't out yet. And the Focus was really hit the spot for the right money and we LOVE it. But if this car was out then, I would've had a serious look at it. It's in the same ballpark as far as size, weight, performance, and looks. That being said, the 2009 Focus is a sweet car. When I get in it, I think, this is a really nice car. I like driving it and I like the way it looks and it feels good. That being said, I think this Sonic has promise. It seems like it would be up the alley of a lot of people on here. I would think there are all kinds of things you could do to tune it and hot rod it. I'm amazed at what people all do on here to their Focii. But, I don't know if there will parts available, like they are for this car. Probably too early to tell. Plus, the Focus had the Rally stuff going for it. The Sonic, not so much.
