Commuting DEAR GOD!

I've got a roughly 65 mile commute EACH WAY every day from Antioch to Menlo Park. Now for starters, I'm not bitching, I'm just trying to think of alternatives. I'm only a few minutes from the Pittsburg BART station, and my office is only about a 20/25 minute drive from the Fremont BART station, so here's what I'm thinking about:
  1. Is there any place near/around the Fremont BART station that I could park a car at overnight and on the weekends?
  2. What would be a good "disposable" car for me to do that? I'm thinking less than $2K for the car. Something relatively reliable and easy to fix, and something nobody would bother trying to break into or steal.

Sounds exactly like a ford focus or late 90s escort to me.

Most Bart stations will allow overnight.

As a guy who's weekly commute used to be 800 miles I feel your pain.

So I figure, about 130 miles each day @ $4.20 for gas is $18.16.
BART is $12.8 round trip plus $1 to park. Plus gas to the station and to work, which is a total of about 50 miles round trip, so figure $7ish for gas. That gives you about $21.

I just don't know if it's worth it or if I should spend the $$$ on a good upholsterer and make my driver's seat feel like it came out of a BMW.


This is what BART Says:

24-hour weekday time limit
There is a 24-hour weekday time limit on parking in all BART lots (See Airport/Long Term Parking for an exception to this rule). Vehicles left in BART parking facilities for more than 24 hours will be subject to fine.

Extended Weekend Parking
At all parking lots, there is Extended Weekend parking and the 24 hour rule is waived at the start of train service on Friday through 2 a.m. Monday and major holidays that fall on a Monday or Friday. BART riders at stations where there is a daily fee requirement must pay the daily fee for Friday. Should a designated holiday when parking fees are not required (see below) fall on a Friday patrons are allowed to park from the start of train service on Thursday until 2:00 am Monday. If the station has a daily parking fee, it must be paid on Thursday. Should one of the designated holidays fall on a Monday patrons are allowed to park from the start of train service on Friday until 2:00 am Tuesday.

u sittin in the traffic? then bart might be faster but otherwise..... imho
commuting sucks i dont have traffic problems on my humble 85 mile round trip but its all twistys between santa rosa and clear lake area. and 2.5 hours total and 2-3 sets of tires a year depending on how gentle i can be. lol if you do get a beater find a nice old 88-91 civic or somthing like that, they never die. or a escort gt with the mazda 1.8 in it.....

The problem with a civic is it is WAY more likely to get stolen. Old escorts aren't worth anything and neither are their parts, however when maintained (escort wagon would be sweet btw) they run forever kind of like the focus.

You also have to consider the extra insurance on the other car.

Yeah, downhill with a tailwind. :lol: Maybe 50 on a Trail 110, but still ****** scary above 35mph.

How far from your house to the bart station? Can you ride a bicycle there? Ride a bike there, leave your car at Bart, take your car home Friday after work.
