First off, I want to point out that I searched the forums but couldn't find a straight answer. In one thread, one poster said they are the same as zetec, .004-.007 Intake, .011-.013 exhaust...THEN another poster said it was.008-.011 Intake and .012-.016 Exhaust for the SVT. BOTH of them said they got it right out of the service manual...then I was hoping they would sort it out and come up with a correct answer....never happened, so wtf. lol.

Can I get a straight answer from someone? Are the tolerances for the SVT the same as the Zetec, or are the .008-.011 I;.012-.016 E correct?

**Man, If they are the same as the zetec, then ALL my Exhaust clearnaces are out of spec, and only one Intake is in spec. lol**

According to the service manual the clearances are as follows.

Intake .21-.29mm

Exhaust .32-.40mm

It does say to aim for the middle of the tolerance so .25 on the intake and .36 on exhaust.
Thank you!

some advice on valves & adjusting lash specs,

don't believe the number on the bucket or shim ALWAYS measure it with a micrometer.

Aim for the middle of the range

if you cant its better to be on the loose side rather than the tight side you run the risk of burning a valve if its too tight and possibly destroying your head.

as the engine warms up valve specs will tighten slightly anyway.

as valves wear they get tighter

*power can be had from running tight tolerances but you must know what your doing*

I'm really confused as to which source to trust... auto-zones repair guides say that the clearances are different:

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/re...hanical-Components/Valve-Lash-Clearance-Adjustment/_/P-0996b43f802e8252#hd1-1-2

And I have a workshop manual from ford itself for all 2003 focus models, and the SVT and Zetec have the same clearance according to this source.

But I really don't want to believe that the valve clearances are the same for SVT and Zetec.. since that would mean all of mine would be out of spec! But why would Ford put in the wrong clearances into their work manual?!

Any input guys? Are Steve's clearances for sure the ones to go with?

The 2003 shop manual has a lot of wrong specs for the SVT in the engine section. It was clearly copied over from the Zetec section with some specs changed, but not all. The correct clearances for the SVT are:

Intake 0.210-0.290 mm
Exhaust 0.320-0.400 mm

Well, lets see. Do we trust the Ford service manual, Haynes or Autozone?

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Right. The problem is the 2003 Ford service manual has the wrong specs in it, too.
