What was the CEL code. Do you remember, i had a similar experience with my son's 1999 ford Escort with a 2.0 SPI. I think this happen to him because he would ride the car with almost an empty tank of gas. Want i did is change the plugs,wires, a good injector cleaner & clean MAF sensor. You might not have to change plugs & wires but that is up to you. After i clear the codes. It has not come back. Also, don't forget that the fuel filter has to be changed in the long run. Hope this works for you like it did for me.
