I have a 2004 Focus LX with SOHC 2.0 liter engine with 170,000 miles. Intermittently the engine will stop hard (no sputtering), like the key has been turned off. No check engine light or code. Other than this issue, it runs fairly well. So far, it has always started back up immediately. Happens mostly in-town and several times while turning. Hasn't happened while on the interstate. Doesn't seem to be related to engine being cold or hot. Have had it into multiple mechanics and no one can recreate or diagnose the issue.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot would be helpful.

It sounds strange but that could be the fuel pump. If it ran crappy I'd suggest the ignition module. Those are known for cracking.

Car dieing while driving is often a fuel pump. IDK if it's true but I'd heard Ford issued a recall for defective fuel pumps and the shutdown manifested when the car turned.
