would that happen to be the same or similar engine that Ford has used for years in the mustang, Tbird, Ranger?

Not likely the same, the older 2.3s are quite large.

Maybe something akin to the Escort GT of yore?
Something with a S2-type suspension and sportier seats.

they basically confirmed what I already expected.

The 2.3 will bow next spring and the 2.0 will follow in the Fall.

I was really hoping for the 1.8 though. 43mpg would be nice.

Fianlly the Focus will have a smooth free reving powerplant befitting of its handling.

2.3 140-150hp 150ft/lbs of torque.

2.0 130-145hp

I own a Focus SE sport sedan.

Sport is a package that includes the Zetec, spoiler and fog lamps.

hopefully the new sport package will include the S@ suspension.

Biker,

Thanks for the good news...Our research on the 2.3L Ranger engine should pay dividends when the Focus comes equipped with the same engine next year. By the end of this year we will have our own CAI, Header (Shorty and long tube race header), and exhaust for the Ranger and we are working with Pro-Flow to get a higher flowing MAF made as well.

We will crack the engine open and work with a cam manufacturer to get more aggressive cams made for this engine as well, which we can hopefully have out by the time the Focus comes with this engine.

If anyone is going to SEMA this year in Vegas, be sure to let us know so we can meet up and talk about the future of the Focus......

Sounds good, mainly because there is no way that SVT will allow only a 25 HP difference between a "sport" and an SVT Focus.

Sounds like good things are coming for Focus lovers for years to come. And that is "A Good Thing" ™.

I hope so, but they did come out with an SVT product in the past with only 25hp more than the standard; The SVT Contour with 195 (later 200) and the Contour SE V6 with 170.

The SVT may be supercharged in 2004.

Cause it would be one of the, if not THE worst waste of resources in the history of Ford Motor company to develop an entirely new supercgarged drivetrain for the SVT Focus when they already have a turbocharged one ready in Europe that was designed for the RS.

Um... why don't you check into SVT's new performance partners initiative. Jackson Racing comes to mind. Let's see, Cobra: supercharged, Lightning: supercharged, SVT Focus concept: supercharged. See a pattern here?

And if the turbo motor is ready, then why is the RS not officially available yet?

And we ALL know how much benefit is obtained from the Jackson Racing Supercharger on a Zetec

I see a pattern that SVE favors superchargers, who know maybe they are afraid of turbos I don't know.

I don't know what's holding he RS up, I know I'm not going to be able to buy it anyways so I'm not following it too close. Either way Ford of Europe has been working on the RS for like 2 years now.

Ford Racing went with a turbo for the FR200 Concept.

It sickens me to think of SVE flushing money down the toilet while the rest of Ford is screaming about cost cutting and cheapening cars left and right.

<sarcasm>besides I can't believe that SVE would make a decision based on political reasons that would be more expensive and/or negatively affect performance</sarcasm> oh wait that already happened with the Focus SVT and the Getrag!!!
