TGIF everyone and good evening!

I've been shopping for a less fuel hungry daily driver, that was still fun to drive and have been looking at older Audi's (A4's), E36 BMW's and older WRX's. Almost talked myself into a 2004 GTO - but hated the wee little trunk and the two doors.

Then I stumbled across some SVT Focus cars while perusing Craigslist and remember how cool they seemed when they came out back at the start of the 21st century. Think I was driving a 2002 WRX wagon at the time, but still liked the concept of the SVT Focus.

Less items to break than the Audi and a bit better fit and finish than the WRX (at least that's how it appears to me)

So, I started looking for local SVT Focus vehicles, not too many out there in my neck of the woods (Near Joplin, MO). Found a clean 2003 down near Dallas being sold by a private party, and then I stumbled across this relatively low mileage 2004 four door example in Wichita, KS with 70,300 miles on the odometer.

Not sure if I can post links due to my "noob" status. Remove the underscores to use the link.

Any thoughts on the price, deal or no deal?

My other bet is a 2003 with twice the miles at half the price - less than 30 minutes away. Was there ever a fake hood scoop as a factory option?

Thank you for your time in this matter.

If you pay 9.8k for a used svt with 70k miles I will LOL. That car is worth 6k.

Welcome to the forum. SVT's can be had for cheap and are great cars, don't be a dealership sucker.

Hoodscoop was not a factory option.

I bought my 03 ZX5 for $4200 with 110K and its in excellent condition. No mods, no BS, 100% factory.

Based on the "mods" to the silver svt you posted, Im going to guess its not been treated gently ... if you can find out the maintenance items that have been performed (most importantly, timing belt) and negotiate the price down it *might* be worth your while. Seeing stuff like autozone hood scoops and carbon fiber radio bezels would lead me to believe some young kid owned it who most likely red-lined the car at every opportunity.

The yellow eap svt looks nice but the price seems pretty steep IMO.

Yes, the "dealer" upcharge. Fiat dealer no less. Dealer makes it easier to get ride of my current DD - but is it worth the extra moola??? Probably not. If it was closer, it might be worth a drive just to check it out.

There was a 2002 SVT ZX3, with a s/c (system uknown) that was local - but it's no longer listed on CL. They were asking $5500.00 - they posted the usual crappy pictures on CL and the usual non-helpful verbiage.

Very helpful, thanks.

Thanks again for the feedback and data points.

How ever much you decide it's worth make sure any car you purchase has a recently refresh timing assembly.

Exactly. $400 or so in parts and labor will save thousands if the timing lets go.

Good luck on your search.

The SVT isn't afraid of its redline. So, worrying about someone 'beating' on it shouldn't be of great concern. However, as described the Silver one would worry me because those types of mods lead one to assume the previous owner was not careful about routine maintenance. These cars are rather high-maintenance and require that you not neglect the car, otherwise you will be looking at some very expensive repair bills.

And not to dissuade you from your SVT search, but they aren't the most economical cars out there. They require premium, and usually only average mid 20s in combined driving. If you have a lot of city driving in your daily commute you might even see worse.

The SVT is an accomplished handling machine, and taken as a package is one of the most refined vehicles produced in the 2000's.

Which is why the 2004 Dealer car looks so much better - looks to have been adult owned. Time to do a AutoCheck to verify ownership log.

My previous fun car was a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata (factory turbocharged Miata) - which required premium - so I'm used to the "fuel" surcharge.

Again, thank you for your words of wisdom.

If that '04 is in perfect condition it may be worth around $8000. The 5 doors definitely fetch a premium at resale but $9852 seems awfully high though. I bought my '03 SVT 5 door with all the options brand new in Jan '04 for $15,000. I know I got a really good deal but that dealer price still seems high for a car that's nearly 10 years old. But keep in mind you're looking at an EAP car. (European Appearance Package) The 5 door EAP was only available in 2004 so it is fairly rare. Also the Screaming Yellow paint was an EAP only color. The EAP cars came with all the options: HID headlamps, Cold weather package (traction control, heated seats and mirrors, block heater), Sunroof, and Audiophile sound system with subwoofer.

A new timing belt with tensioner and idler is really a necessity. I'm betting it hasn't been changed yet. Apart from that, there really aren't any high priority items that need attention. There was a TSB to fix rattling clutches but it was a nuisance issue not safety. There are some other slight little issues but they're documented and in some cases, better parts are out there to fix them.

It's a really fun car. It won't win any drag races but has the best bang for the buck out there.

Hey guys.

He seems like he wants to pay market retail value for a riced out SVT and trade in his car for a loss.

So let him.

Maybe he will derice it to glory.

Drew,

The SVT at the Dealer is bone stock - not "riced" out. I've already had an offer from the dealer with the yellow 2004 and declined his offer.

There is another private party car that was most likely owned by a twenty something kid that was "riced" out. It was mainly displayed for comparison purposes.

Thanks for reading.

RUN! That price is way too high! Especially considering that the timing belt will have to be done as soon as you buy it... if you haggle them down to 5500 to 6200 it may be worth it.

Keep in mind folks Yosso is talking about the '04 Screaming Yellow EAP 5 door....literally the most expensive SVTF ever sold. KBB and Nada don't even understand what that car is and they rarely sell here. Agreed that the asking price is a bit high but if it really is pristine, well documented, and unadulterated it could fetch close to what is being asked. If the timing belt does need to be replaced then that knocks the price down a bit but if he's willing to do the job himself, it's not a big deal.

Depends on how much he wants the car. Satisfying a desire is sometimes worth a little cash. If that car really is the cat's ass, I would probably offer $8000 cash and see what the dealer says. Even at that price I guarantee they're making a decent mark up.

I would ask additional pics on both front Recaro's, the lighting in the one [& only] pic makes me question their condition. Plus no driver's seat pic....
Also you think they would have at least pressure-wash the engine-bay to boost the car's "clean" image....
Wow, makes me curious on what I could get for my SY SVTF 5-door..... If they can get $9k for theirs, more power to them.... I guess....

#23 ·
Damn, you'd think these dealerships would take the hour it takes to clean the engine bay and polish the headlights.

A black 04 3 door is selling on here for $6500 with less than 50k miles, all SVTs are overpriced by dealers, the prices on the for sale thread here are much more reasonable. But I'd probably pay $7500 for that one just based on how rare of is

Edit: and this thread is old and no longer relevant, sorry

Just to throw a wrench into the works i paid 3,600 for a '03 SVT with 69k miles on it. It did need a fair amount of little things when i first got it but its been stone cold reliable ever since i dumped a few hundred in it right after purchase.

I bought my 2009 sedan for $9999 with 58k on it 2 years ago. Price is way to high IMO.

I got my 2003 SVT 2dr for 6,500 ish. and on top of that, it needed a 1,400.00 Manitoba road safety. which previous owner paid for. and had 70,000KM (43,496MILES) only svt for sale in the city. not there's a comp orange one up for sale...... oh well lol

I thing your gonna maybe be paying a little too much..

only things that bug me on that
1. it modified already, by whom? and how well was the work done? i don't trust the corvette mechanic story, sorry.
2. why on earth is the front rubber lip painted yellow?
3. why did it need a new water pump? this leads me to believe it had failed while driving and over heated.

The lip is probably yellow for the same reason the valve cover is red.

As for the water pump? He just did a timing belt and even though it's not required most people do the water pump when they do the timing belt. My water pump was leaking (very slightly) when I did the timing belt at 90k but I didn't replace it until it started dripping at almost 130k.
