Days ahead of its 100th World Rally Championship start this weekend at France, the next generation of the Ford Focus WRC made its first outing on the nearby roads of Cumbria, England, where the M-Sport squad that runs Ford’s rally efforts is based.
The current Focus debuted at the WRC level in 1999, and while unable to deliver either a driver’s or a manufacturer’s championship for the Blue Oval, the car experienced plenty of success, taking several rally wins and establishing an impressive record of over 50 consecutive points finishes.
With next year’s all-new machine, based on the second generation of the production car (still unavailable to American customers), Ford will be hoping for an all-out attack on both the driver’s and manufacturer’s crowns - Ford’s last title came in 1981 - as the signing of double world champion Marcus Gronholm last week further indicated.
The ‘06 Focus will even get a head start on the competition, as its official debut is scheduled for the Rally Australia season finale next month.
“It was only supposed to be a shakedown, but we were encouraged by what we saw so it developed into something more serious,” M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson revealed to Motorsport News.
are you being cheeky? What does it mean by "Still unavailable to American customers"?
