Here is the article: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060802/AUTO01/608020385/1148

Here is the portion of the article im talking about;
That's 3 miles per gallon better than the 2006 version, thanks to some tweaking by Ford engineers.
"The engine had really been calibrated for emissions instead of fuel economy," said Nicholas Schubeck, supervisor of powertrain calibration for Ford.
Ford also has released a service fix so mechanics can retune 2006 models to get similar performance increases.

So anyone know the TSB. Ive got a service rep looking into it.

For reference, the changes between MY 2006 and 2007 are:

Mileage:
Manual: 26/34 -> 27/37
Auto: 26/32 -> 27/34
ST: 22/31 -> 22/32

Power/torque:
20: 136hp@6000, 133lb.ft@4500 -> 136lb.ft@4250
20E: 130hp@6000, 129lb.ft@4000
23: 151hp@5750, 154lb.ft@4250

Update:
From http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=24076 and http://www.prdomain.com/companies/F/FordMotor/newsreleases/200682335018.htm
“The Focus engine was originally calibrated for emissions,” says Nicholas Schubeck, supervisor, Powertrain Calibration for Ford Motor Company. “We noticed during testing that we could get a lot better fuel mileage by making some adjustments to the calibration while still meeting emissions.”

The team increased the engine’s spark and revised the exhaust-gas recirculation and intake manifold runner control (IMRC) schedules. The IMRC is a device on the intake manifold that increases the velocity of the air going into the cylinder at low speeds. Increasing air velocity helps in the proper air-fuel ratios.

“The issue is that the system also creates a lot of pumping losses, which reduce fuel mileage,” says Schubeck. “By opening up the IMRC a lot earlier to reduce pumping losses, fuel mileage was increased.”

This change, along with tire improvements, accounted for a 3-mile-per-gallon improvement on the EPA highway fuel economy label for five-speed manual models, which now see 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway. The 2.0-liter automatic delivers 27 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway. For 2007, the base Focus models come equipped with 14-inch Hankook tires that offer better rolling resistance than the 2006 model.

Schubeck says customers will also notice an enhancement in performance. The extra engine spark improves acceleration, and the refinements to the engine have eliminated the hesitation that normally occurs when the air conditioning is is in operation.

Would this also apply to 05 model? I have to believe it's the exact same engine.

I just phoned the dealership to ask in advance, but they claimed they know nothing about it. They also said there should either be something wrong with the car, or there must be a recall. None of these hold for this case. :dunno:
Anybody know what category this falls into? or a TSB number or something?:confused:

It won't be a recall but it should be a service bulletin (in other words, if you are still under warrenty they should give it to you if you request it). You can easily make this case by complaining about the gas mileage.

I just had this done on monday. Didnt cost anything, and i noticed they wrote it up as complaint about fuel economy.

The receipt i got says this
"poor fuel mileage
test EEC. Test fuel pressure. no codes. monitor pid and call hotline, program PCM and retest"

To soon to tell if i will actually get an increase. If they are giving you a hard time about it.. just take it in and complain about the fuel economy.. and maybe casually mention that you read something about an update..
