Well yes im the n00b here but not quite so

Anyhow i figured i'd start my post count here on a good productive note. I moderate on Floridaneons.org and am in the process of gaining that status on SRTforums. I was browsing through the new mags and found a rather interesting read. It is small, blue and is fun.....its 245hp Mini Cooper S tuned by Mini Mania. I want to see how you guys feel about this lastest tuner Mini.

Sure the car is not cheap bang for the buck but we must admit that stock the SVT Focus rivals it in price, handling
and sheer driving enjoyment. Fun is a word that has quickly becoming less associated with hot hatches or attempts at it. Look at Honda and VW, nice quality products but where is the fun in driving overweight, underpowered and bland hatches.

As we all know the original Mini did start the then slow Sport Compact movement but today is just merely part of it. Not to be forgotten there are a few tuners who turn up the notch on this new era mini by means of boosting the output of the already potent 1.6L pentastar SOHC. Yes i did say pentastar as in venture between Daimler Chrysler and BMW to build a 1.6L chain driven SOHC motor based on the 420a Neon motor for use in export Neons and the Mini line.

In stock for a Mini Cooper S offers 163hp but we all have quickly come to learn that those numbers are just a tad bit underrated. Enter Mini Mania.....they are just that...nuts, taking the already capable and willing stock S they provided us with a ready to sell/bolt on kit for this hot hatch. For the price of $5000 you receive:

MM CAI
MM pulley
MM A/W Intercooler w/ pump
Nology Plug wires
MM ported head
MM retuned Ecu

which is estimated to net you a 63 percent increase in power over stock. For the drag racers:

before =

0-60 in 7.2 sec
1/4 in 15.38 @ 91.70mph
Slalom at 66.8 mph
Skidpad .83g

After =

0-60 in 5.9 sec
1/4 in 14.24 @ 100.02mph
Slalom at 70.2mph
Skidpad .86g

So all in all i'd say $5000 gets you enough:

-66% power addition
-1.3 sec deduction in 0-60 sprint
-over 1 sec reduction in 1/4 mile ET
-about 9mph improvement in the 1/4 mile

any thoughts?

neglected to mention the $1800 worth of suspension and brake upgrades...crap also there is more for the aformentioned $5k in form of a lighter flywheel, header, cat back and WTF!...Phantom Grip....

So for $5000 Mini owneres could get:

cai, plug wires, pulley, ecu, cai, hedder, head port, catback, phantom grip, intercooler, flywheel, some suspension and brake goodies?

Now if thats correct, im thinking it sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

it's great when you have a nice canvas to start with...

that sounds like a great package! and i bet it is SUPER fun to drive!

do you have any pics of this setup on the mini?

i started with my mazdaspeed protege a few months ago, and I will be able to do very similar upgrades for the same $$...

well, sort of. I worked out a sponsorship w/ ES... so i am promoting the products in exchange for heavily discounted prices... my hardpipes, intake, front mount intercooler (all pipes ceramic coated), turbo timer, and boost controller cost me under $2k. i will be adding a turbo-back exhaust, electric boost controller, drilled/slotted rotors and steel braided brake and clutch lines w/ carbon fibre pads, and a stand alone fuel management system and i will still be well under $5k into the car...

Its not too bad, but with nearly $7000 on the price tag, alot of people are going to look at those numbers and shy away. When people spend that kind of money on a car they're looking for a very drastic improvement.

Dont take that the wrong way, I know dropping a full second and adding 9mph to your trap is pretty damned drastic; but for alot of people still sitting in the 14s, no matter how big of an improvement overall, is going to drive them away.

Tired: if i could do it all over again with my focus, a lot of things would have been different. My new project is definately more expensive... but i feel it will also be a lot more gratifying!

theres something bout having a blown 1.6 whizzing away at your whims....ive driven a few Cooper S'..fun, quick and yeah well fun
Image
but yeah to spend 6800 and still be in the 14s is definitely a turn off for some but we all know a 100mph trap means this puppy will do high 13s if driven properly

Might help if we owned Minis?

It's not like he posted it in Zetec tuning, there are lots of posts here about cars that aren't the Focus.

I think it's a great package, better than the Mini available one, that's for sure. One thing though, how would the mods listed improve the skid pad and slalom?

No, I'm sorry it just came off to me more as an ad?

Hell, if I could afford a mini, I'd certainly be driving one. But for now I'll just love my Focus

I believe they make a 200 horsepower Mini Cooper now for 2004. Now that should be a beast...or should I say a mini-beast.

I read the $5000 package was call the
"Works" S mini
Seem like most dealers want $23000 to $26000 for a S mini
I have ot seen the "Works kit" on a lot yet it might be added
on ones car after purchase.
I also remember it also works with the STOCK warantee.

In 3 YEARS of the SVT why could Ford NOT add any power options or upgrades from factory or as a option from dealers like the Mini "Works"

the John Cooper Works kit is something different, it's a dealer-installed option that boosts stuff up to a pretty respectable number, but it sounds like the Mini Mania kit is a better deal. dunno about the Phantom Grip though, maybe they'd swap it for a LSD with a good rep?

MINI is not that appealing anymore to me. ****y dealership with outrageous overprice tags really threw me off.
Image

But, it is a choice, may be I just don't have too much $$ to spare for a toy like that.

Well it kinda sucks that one bad dealership spoiled the entire car for you. Honestly NEVER let a dealership make a decision about a product for you. Just drive the car and then decide if you like it or not.

The MINI is a great little car. I've had mine since Thanksgiving and its amazing how i'm scared to go even faster and faster on some offramps since it just sticks and it can go faster. Its also great to hear how easy they are to MOD, a nice 17% or 19% reduction pulley for the supercharger gets you between 23-35HP. One company even says on its forums that if you get a 15% pulley with their computer chip will pull 195-200WHP.

There are only two things they dropped the ball on. First they weigh a bit too much at 2500 for the Cooper and near 2700 for the Cooper S. Then you have the pretty weak brakes on the Cooper S, if they would have matched pretty much what the SVT comes with it would be even that much more special.
