Hi

I'm new to the forum but I've been reading some great stuff for a while now... -

Im considering a duratec for my Westfield.... I came across This company at the Autosports show who have shown me a 300BHP duratec engine running on their dyno... Awesome....

Its out of my league cost-wise but I thought it might be interesting generally. Their heads are superb though so I'll be going for one of them...

It does look nice, and it's probably cheaper than Cosworth's 300 hp crate engine. A nice turbo or supercharger seems like a more reasonable option for a Focus, though.

A Westfield is a Lotus Seven replica, isn't it? I love those. You need to post some pictures in Team Rigz. :)

Hi fellas

Ric Wood... thats the guy... (well spotted)... Obviously the 300 BHP duratec is a full race engine... but I don't know of anyone who can do a normally aspirated duratec that can do a genuine 300bhp... believe me I saw it run on the dyno.... he knows these engines for sure.

They have like 200 bhp versions and 250 and 300. If you live in a no emissions state you can get it maybe.
You can buy all of those in California, from Cosworth USA. Of course, they're smog-illegal, and they carry a pricetag befitting a Cosworth engine, but you can still get them. :p

300hp for a duratec is very easy. But that is 300hp at the crank. Comptech has one for the world challenge cars, the mazda6 tripoint car. I contacted them to do our engines for world challenge, but we found that we can do them in house and still have the same hp, but we are using a 2.3L

THe 2.0 will be fun to try, because the revs will be a lot higher. I can't wait to start on those engines, because then we can race WTCC with the 2.0L Duratec.

Nice pictures of the engines though, I like it.

I don't see why everyone is so suprised, Walter Marcy was making 221whp (260bhp) on the black car. There was a lot left to do to the setup, and it will be done on the silver car. I'd be willing to put money on it being a 300bhp motor.

a lot of HP is nice but not really practical. The cost compared to how many you will sell is few. Sure having a 300hp motor is nice, but not in the street and the price tag on it is sky high!!! I know what it costs to make one and I don't selling many to the public, but to other race teams I do see it. I think 200hp to wheels on a focus is more than enough power.
When I ran BMW's we ran a 2002 that was 260hp at the crank and that was a
2.0L all motor.

Keep in mind that British tuners like Raceline, Raceco, SBD, Mountune, and Minister who make big power Duratecs are primarily targeting the se7ens market (Caterham, Westfield, Birkin, etc.) not Focus owners. That market is surprisingly big in England and there is a segment that is willing to spend pretty big money on what is effectively a toy. In fact it seems a lot of us have more money tied up in our se7en than in our daily driver. Practical? No, but then neither is driving a car that doesn't have doors, comes with a removable top that makes entry and exit a challenge even for contortionists yet only keeps some of the rain out, and that makes a Miata look big ;)

Westfield now offers 190hp & 250hp 2.0L Duratecs from the factory, and of course Caterham has 200hp & 260hp 2.3L Duratecs available in their new CSR series. I have a 190hp spec 2.0L Duratec in my Westfield (however, not the factory engine), and although that moves the car along pretty well, I am considering upgrading it to 220hp spec. Sure, 190hp in a car that weighs less than 1240lb with fuel makes for a pretty good power to weight ratio, but 220 hp makes for one that is even better.

Some day I will build a Seven replica with a 2.3 in it. :e-sigh:

Edit: It will be British Racing Green with yellow accents.

Sure 300BHP is an awesome deal. However, I don't imagine a daily driver with a 300BHP Duratec.

One way or another, low end torque will be traded for high-end horsepower. You'll have to rev that engine well past 7,000 RPM to make that power. I am pretty sure 300BHP Duratec will be a bit noisy, a trick to drive in heavy traffic and not too practical for morning commute.

I drove Marcy Motorsport 221whp Focus, it was a blast! Really put a grin on my face, and like Aerostudent said there was huge room left for more power. The car was amazing, but to be honest for my morning commute I'd rather drive a 1.8T VW/Audi. Or newer 2.0T engine. Take a test drive and it is everything that 300BHP Duratec won't be on the street :).

On the track I'd rather have a 300BHP Duratec focus than VW 1.8T with all the boost in the world:).

Only when your Focus becomes a weekend toy, 300bhp N/A Duratec starts to make sense.
